Could my RPR 6.5CR barrel have eroded 0.050"?!

My Savage 12FV has eroded .050 every 1000 rounds I'm passing 3000 rounds now. The throat has moved out to about .140 or so. Sounds like yours is doing better. I shoot RL16 41.9 G and 147 eldm's.
Still shoots under MOA no problem. HB

I currently shoot a 6.5 RPR, gen 2. I have been shooting this regularly for approximately 2 years, maybe a tad more. I don't know exactly how many pills have gone down the barrel but probably around 2500 rounds. I checked using my hornady tool to see what the distance to the lands were expecting maybe 0.010"-0.015" deeper than factory new and maybe I would then adjust my bullet out the same....holding a typical 0.020" jump to the lands. To my surprise, the thing is 0.050" deeper than when I first bought it!!!

Question is.....is that typical? I don't run it hot, my velocity with a 140 ELDM using H4350 is right at 2700 fps or a smidgen less. I have been thinking of getting another barrel in the future and maybe I need to be getting that going a lot sooner than I thought.

I had about 2000 rnds down my RPR 6.5 and my barrel was about .050 deeper. I just re-barreled with a Bartlein Rem Varmit contour....seems to be shooting pretty good again

I don't even want to hear complaints about your overbore 6.5 Costmoor's barrel life.

My last .223 chamber has moved over 50 mils in 1,700 rounds.

Bite me. :)

Your sarcasm is duly noted. ;)
I would say, at least for me, it is much harder to chase rifling than throat erosion. Just the process of keeping the throat maintained has to cause some erosion, don't you think?
I've owned and shot a bunch of 6.5 caliber rifles and will venture to say the 6.5 Creedmoor has produced less erosion than most. I thing the 6.5-284 is the worst offender I ever owned.
As for the post above comparing 6.5's to the 308 there are many (most) cartridges/calibers that erode more quickly than the 308.

You misread me. I wasn't being sarcastic because it's true.

$450 blank for 1,000 yard. Toast, more-or-less.

I just get shitty with myself sometimes for not choosing a larger cartridge for that kind of burn.

The Costmoor comment is about the brand, and I suppose that was definitely sarcastic, though very much true...

...still some awesome shooting mats though.

I think the 6.5 will erode much faster if you shoot higher pressure/faster rounds. 2800+

I'm curious, I've seen some aftermarket barrels for sale for the RPR for $450-600. Wouldn't these be a lot better than a factor replacement at $400?

http://www.shilen.com/RPRBarrels.html ($400-500)
https://patriotvalleyarms.com/ruger-precision-rifle-rpr-prefit-match-barrel/ $500
https://criterionbarrels.com/products/prefits/ruger-precision-rifle-pre-fit-barrels-stock-models/ ($500-600)

Edit: for completeness... I also saw good reviews for this barrel.

Bought a used .223 barrel once. Hardly used the ad said. Turned out it had no rifling for the first 3 inches of the barrel.

That sounds about normal to me. I'm at 2900 with .065"-.070" wear on my factory barrel RPR 6.5 CM. And my reloads are on the higher node.

So my buddy ordered one of these mags and they are very nice. I have been using the Magpul AI mags in 5 and 10rd capacity. The Magpul are plastic but hold up very nice. The new MDT 10rd mag is of very nice quality, both in materials and the finish. Since I reload, and I'm chasing the lands for accuracy, I need the mags that allow for longer length loaded rounds. The Magpul AI mags worked great for this when the barrel was new because they except 2.860" OA. But now with .065" of the lands gone the new MDT mag is much better. It will except 2.960" OAL, with out the binder plate. That extra .100" is very nice in excepting the extra length rounds that I need for chasing the lands and continuing to have great accuracy from my barrel for a while longer. While I do have Accuracy Mags, with binder plates, these new MDT mags seem to be a better mag. Two major things different are that the MDT mag is double stacked single feed, which makes its length shorter by about 1". And the other is the finish is a much better quality than the paint on the Accuracy Mag. Hopes this little bit of info helps you, if you start chasing the lands and needing a longer acceptable OAL mag.
