Could my RPR 6.5CR barrel have eroded 0.050"?!

I currently shoot a 6.5 RPR, gen 2. I have been shooting this regularly for approximately 2 years, maybe a tad more. I don't know exactly how many pills have gone down the barrel but probably around 2500 rounds. I checked using my hornady tool to see what the distance to the lands were expecting maybe 0.010"-0.015" deeper than factory new and maybe I would then adjust my bullet out the same....holding a typical 0.020" jump to the lands. To my surprise, the thing is 0.050" deeper than when I first bought it!!!

Question is.....is that typical? I don't run it hot, my velocity with a 140 ELDM using H4350 is right at 2700 fps or a smidgen less. I have been thinking of getting another barrel in the future and maybe I need to be getting that going a lot sooner than I thought.

I am going to run an abridged OCW test. In fact, that's why i made the length-to-lands measurement to see if I should change my seating depth for the OCW test. I noticed my SD/ES were off and I was 4 firings into my Lapua brass. I salt bath annealed the brass. I also just started a new jug of H4350, so I am running another OCW test around the load that has been working. I think my groups are not as good as before, but I'm going to see if I can tune it before pronouncing a verdict.

At 2500rds youre way past top notch life. If youre just plinking who cares about the throat moving forward. If youre competing with it, barrels are a component. Youre at the point of primers falling out and you putting them back in with your thumbs- get a new barrel

My Bud had .0008" !!! after 800 rds in a long necked 6XC running 107s in mid 3200s, XCal bbl he chambered himself.

Pills???? Was it sick, did it have to be sedated?? Seriously, I think with that powder in that cartridge you should be glad that that's all it has lengthened.

My Ruger PRP became inconsistent at the range. I bought a bore scope and found that the throat was eroded on the left side extending about a 1/2 inch into the lands. I called Ruger and asked about a replacement barrel because I had such good use or the original. They would not sell me a barrel but offered to replace it for me. I sent it back to them and two weeks later it was back in my hands. It shoots like new and I am very pleased. Coast was $400.00 which included shipping both ways. By the way, the old barrel had 2,000 rounds down the tube.

Some guys I shoot with chase there lands, you may give that a try or put the bullet in the lands and start all over to see what happens.

I've seen throats move .025" in the first 200 rounds. First thing I do with a new barrel is polish out the throat with Iosso on a patch. That gets rid of any burrs, however imperceptible, that may left over from the reamer. Then I measure.
I don't think, at 2,500 rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor, your barrel has anything other than normal wear.

Every 6.5 I have had , has had a shorter life than my .308’s .
All my rifles are Match Rifles shot Prone .
I had 260 Impv. .047 at 1900 rounds .
I am a believer that small Hole big burn = short life for the throat ?

My Gen 2 barrel was worn out at 900 rounds, as was first noticed on the target, then confirmed with a bore scope. I chased the lands once at around 600 rounds if I remember correctly.

My buddy’s Gen 1 is doing well at around 2500 rounds. It seems that the Gen 1 barrels lasted far longer.

I think the 6.5 will erode much faster if you shoot higher pressure/faster rounds. 2800+

I'm curious, I've seen some aftermarket barrels for sale for the RPR for $450-600. Wouldn't these be a lot better than a factor replacement at $400?

Edit: for completeness... I also saw good reviews for this barrel.
