Cooling down barrel during relay in F-Class

In the heat of the summer (in Texas that is VERY warm) IF I can, I put the rifle in my truck and let it run with the A/C on. Not always possible. You can get a air mattress "air pump" (camping style) and get a clear hose to fit over the nozzle and pump atmospheric air thru the barrel. I don't know how much that helps down here. However, "up north" it may very well work. BY-THE-WAY you will need a motorcycle battery to run the air pump for the time between relays you are using to cool the barrel off. The ""D" batteries will not last a whole day.

I'd strongly recommend against getting up out of position and screwing around with some elaborate boon-doggle procedure during your string of fire. Last weekend I finished a string of unlimited sighters (took 10, mainly because I was burning up rounds I didn't want to have to pack and ship home) and 20 record shots in a little over 7 minutes, finishing with a 198-6X @ 1000yds. Yes, the barrel was freakin' hot. Don't touch it. Set it aside to cool a bit before you cover it or case it. Watch and laugh when someone with shorts on brushes up against it and yelps like a scalded cat ;D

I did the same thing Monte, i ran 11 sighters then ran my 20 for record rather quickly. Barrel was a bit toasty by the end but was still hammering away......

Leaving the bolt all the way open with nothing in the chamber does help with cooling the barrel between shots. This is what I do waiting for the target to come back up. If the condition I am shooting in stays favorable I will have a round laying on the follower so I can chamber the round to get the shot off quicker when the target reappears. This all goes out the window if the pit service is excellent and the condition stays. Then its hammer time! Barrels transfer heat better than most think unless the day is hot, very humid and rather still. Then they , like the shooter just stay hot (and miserable). Monty ( memilanuk) has some great points also. Especially the shorts thing.

I try to bring spare "tires" down for you guys every match. No benefit to me, I do it so I do not have to here about all the advantages I have of getting a barrel when I want one without having to wait. It just eliminates one excuse for you whiners that I have to listen to. They last a long time in a safe, it does pay to plan ahead as Erik eluded too, they are expendable! Buy two!
