Cooling down barrel during relay in F-Class

Are there any rules to cooling down a barrel (by any means...i guess) during the middle of a relay?

not saying that it makes sense to do it, but was just curious if it is legal or not.

There's nothing in the books that I can find. You do mean on the firing line correct? Not hopping up with everything and running to the rig?

I have thought about squirting ice water down the barrel thru a tight fitting hose via breech end. But it may present a whole new bunch of problems I would not be ready for. My barrel seems to like running in the HOT mode, even though I don't.

In the heat of the summer (in Texas that is VERY warm) IF I can, I put the rifle in my truck and let it run with the A/C on. Not always possible. You can get a air mattress "air pump" (camping style) and get a clear hose to fit over the nozzle and pump atmospheric air thru the barrel. I don't know how much that helps down here. However, "up north" it may very well work. BY-THE-WAY you will need a motorcycle battery to run the air pump for the time between relays you are using to cool the barrel off. The ""D" batteries will not last a whole day.

Nothing says you can't just shoot slow(er) or pause shooting during your string. There's a reason barrels used for Fullbore (pair fire) last longer. I'd strongly recommend against getting up out of position and screwing around with some elaborate boon-doggle procedure during your string of fire. Bad enough to get 'out' of sequence with the wind - some days you just don't have any choice but to wait for your condition to come back, but if your gun won't shoot 25 rounds hot n dirty, make it so.

Last weekend I finished a string of unlimited sighters (took 10, mainly because I was burning up rounds I didn't want to have to pack and ship home) and 20 record shots in a little over 7 minutes, finishing with a 198-6X @ 1000yds. Yes, the barrel was freakin' hot. Don't touch it. Set it aside to cool a bit before you cover it or case it. Watch and laugh when someone with shorts on brushes up against it and yelps like a scalded cat ;D

I did the same thing Monte, i ran 11 sighters then ran my 20 for record rather quickly. Barrel was a bit toasty by the end but was still hammering away...... ;)

My safe is full of spare tires :o ...........with no rims, if you get my drift ;)

im even thinking of a basic lathe to do my own chambers.

The US NRA rule that comes into play, depending on what you try to do to cool your barrel, is:

3.18 General—All devices or equipment which may facilitate shooting and which are not mentioned in these rules, or which are contrary to the spirit of these rules and regulations, are forbidden. The Match Director, Official Referee, Jury Chairman or Supervisor shall have the right to examine a shooter’s equipment or apparel. The responsibility shall be upon the competitor to submit questionable equipment and apparel for official inspection and approval in sufficient time prior to the beginning of a match so that it will not inconvenience either the competitor or the official.

bsumoba,
Leaving the bolt all the way open with nothing in the chamber does help with cooling the barrel between shots. This is what I do waiting for the target to come back up. If the condition I am shooting in stays favorable I will have a round laying on the follower so I can chamber the round to get the shot off quicker when the target reappears. This all goes out the window if the pit service is excellent and the condition stays. Then its hammer time! Barrels transfer heat better than most think unless the day is hot, very humid and rather still. Then they , like the shooter just stay hot (and miserable). Monty ( memilanuk) has some great points also. Especially the shorts thing. :o Barrels wear out. Especially if you are using an overbore cartridge. That's why they are THREADED.

I was just curious.

In a non-changing wind condition I will not care about barrel heat and I am going to sling those bullets downrange, hopefully right on the spotter disk that is located in the X-ring.

I have prepped myself mentally that barrels are like tires. that's not a problem.

I also have tried 10-15 shot strings at 100 yards to see if there is any POI shift during extended firings.

I try to bring spare "tires" down for you guys every match. No benefit to me, I do it so I do not have to here about all the advantages I have of getting a barrel when I want one without having to wait. It just eliminates one excuse for you whiners that I have to listen to. They last a long time in a safe, it does pay to plan ahead as Erik eluded too, they are expendable! Buy two!

Think of barrels like race car tires if you want to be successful in F-Class.

Are you bringing my (set of tires) barrel to the next 1000 yard?

Yes, I have it sitting here for you.

Erik, you coming to Palo Alto? Pardon the hijack.

He better come to Palo Alto! After his 600 yard win in those miserable conditions at Ben Avery, he needs to be brought back to earth! I plan on doing just that! LOL!!! I hope he does come, he is a welcome sight at a match.
