Cooling Ammo

Seeing the photo of our Moderators MTM ammo box and the "ice packs" to go with it has me posing a few questions.

At what temperature do you try to maintain, and how do you accomplish it?

Does "sweating" become an issue, and if so how do you control it?

Just curious to see who does what and how they accomplish it.

Danny,

I have tried to keep ammo cool by using small cooler and the blue ice reusable freezer packs. It did now work well for me at all.

We were shooting at Ft. Benning, GA this summer and the temperature was a little over 100 with high humidity. As soon as I took the ammo out of the cooler condensation formed on the brass.

I started popping primers and had a very hard bolt lift.

These same problems happened to several of us at the first day of the F-Class Nats when it was raining a couple of years ago. Our ammo got wet as we were shooting the strings and we started popping primers.

If you have to cool your ammo in hot conditions, I think you are running a little too hot.

I knew a bench shooter that in the winter league up here in Calgary Canada would heat his bullets too. He used a propane heater and setup his MTM cases so they would heat up some. Myself, I would put 8-10 rounds in my shirt pocket inside my coat, good ol' 98.6 worked for me.

Danny, regarding best temp, I'm no expert but 59F is std in balistic pgms so that would be a good number I would think. There must be a reason for that number. But the easiest is 98.6F, no power needed, just a warm body :)

Regarding sweating, that is one of the other uses for the crying towel, right :) That and forehead sweat. Just wipe the case off before you chamber it, esp if it is raining. I try to "shelter" the case until I close the bolt in the rain.
