How many have shot 1mile

One club here has occasional mile and mile and quarter shoots (2200 yards). It s a good time and lots of comradery…. Most shot 7 RM, 338 Edge, 338 Lapua. One guy did bring a 50 and it was a treat for some guys to try it.

A few times of this and you learn real fast that environmentals (wind) much harder to shoot in than just the verticle part as good ballistic software is abound anymore …

That
When I lived in Montana I could shoot as far as I wanted just 10 minutes away. Its fun the first couple times but beyond a mile your just not really in control of the bullet anymore. I took my edge out to 2500 and it was more luck than anything at that point. We held a few group matches at 2k. For most guys just keeping all 5 shots on paper was a challenge. While I did have an interest in how small we could shoot at 2k in a BR format, thats not what most guys are doing.
Dillon range is pretty sweet. We can do it at the Butte Gun Club if we set up in the right spot. 300 win with 215's will do it, 260 with 140's will get you there, my 25 with 135's did it as well. But...... shooting at 5800 feet ASL makes it a little easier.

Thunder Valley isn't too far from us. 338 was too easy but that was expected. 6XC and 6.5x47 isn't too bad depending on the wind. Got a few hits with my 6x47 Savage ELR pistol the day I took it out. The same day I had the pistol my Son took his 6XC with Peep Sights, he couldn't see the 18" circle but Tom has 4'x4' plywood used for paper matches at the mile line. After calculating what my wind hold was and checking the dialed windage the plywood target was exactly what he needed to hold on to hit the 18" circle. Got numerous hits which amazed all of us. Also got a decent hit ratio with his Curtis custom 223 with 88gr Hornady ELDS as long as the wind held steady. That particular day it was around 6 1/2 mil which is around 35ft of correction. We let a buddy try the 223 and he hit on first shot.

Initially thought it'd be really tough but on a decent day with good guns/ammo it really isn't too bad. Having a past ELR World Record Holder shooting buddy with us and giving us someone to compete with helps a lot. Mother Nature has to co-operate or it can be awfully frustrating.

My smith chambered up a couple .338 Lapua imp. I bought one, his was on a stiller action I think mine was on a Weatherby action. Our first mile competition we split the pot. I have had a 1000 yard range at the ranch for a long time but we had to extend it out to a mile, it’s addictive !… hoping to stretch it out to two miles one of these days, I own 3.5 miles along the river but to get out to a mile I’ll have to borrow the neighbors property just because the way it lays I can’t quite do it on my own place

I try to shoot out to a mile once a month if I can. I am blessed to have a spot on BLM about a half hour away. I shoot my 284 and 6.5 CM. The spot I shoot at is windy and has several angles to set up and always get some good wind practice from different angles. I've got target cameras and LED hit indicators. We usually shoot between 1200 and 1800 yards and two attempts per target and try to study and learn to read conditions and how wind moves across terrain. Its good practice.

Yep some good enfo being shared here, I think I’m not the only one enjoying this thread and at least giving us a break from the Garmin vs. Lab radar stuff. The longest I’ve shot was 1150 yards with a first shot hit on a steel target ground hog cut out

Just for the fun of it I ran some random numbers some what worst case scenario of a 6mm 107 bullet with a MV of 2750 and what I came with you would need to come up right at 100 MOA. For 1 mile Which also would go sub sonic at about 1100 yards
just wondering you guys that have done it what was your numbers, did Your load stay super sonic or was it sub sonic before it reached 1mile

I made a hit at 1,762 on my 3rd shot on a 10" steel plate with a 6.5x284. The first two were within an 18" bracket that the plate was hanging from. These dimensions are important because they are roughly the sizes of a mans head and shoulders.
BTW I did this in a coat and sling.

I've shot to a mile with a 7mm-08 and 6.5 Creedmoor. The 7-08 is a 28" 1-8" twist barrel. It has a long throat to accomodate seating bullets out a ways. 20 moa base. I got two hits out of 14 shots from the prone on a mat on sand using a bipod and rear bag. None of us were really zeroed in, so each had to walk rounds in. The bullets I used for that shoot were 168 Berger VLD;s.
The difficult part was optics. I had to choose between my NF 12-42x56 and US Optic ST-10, I went with the NF and that was a mistake. It had an NP-R2 reticle but only something like 36 moa total vertical adjustment. So, from level it had 18 moa up. With the 20 moa base that was a total of 38 moa. I needed 70 moa. So, what I had to do was turn the power down to 12X and use the stadia to hold over. I ended up holding on a bush that was 80 feet above the target. I couldn't see the target when I fired. I'd shoot then adjust down to watch the splash. Backdrop was a mountain and we had good feedback as there was a good sized splash to see. This was out in the desert in NV in August and 90 degrees with 4000 ft. elevation.
The load was 45.1 gr. of RE-19 behind the 168 chrono'd @ 2720.
The Creedmoor was in SW UT in 'warm' not hot conditions, 4000 ft. el. using the ST-10 It has a 60 IPHY reticle that I just dial up 10 and hold, then adjust. The amazing thing about that was it shot a 10" group at one mile with factory ammo. Hornady match 143 gr. chrono'd @ 2770 from my rifle.

Have been with an entire group shooting standard short action calbers and hitting a full size IPSC is more of a game of luck than skill at a mile. A 4x4 foot plate would be doable. You go transonic with most at about 1300 yards and then it gets western. Add wind from any direction and it gets even worse.
A magnum caliber would certainly help as we had a guy with a 300WM make hits more regular, still not consistently.
I personally got tired of wasting ammo. Hit left correct, right correct, low correct..... More a matter of luck.
Strangely 1500-1600 were high percentage impacts but adding that last 160 was rough. Only time I ever shot that far was once but there were enough others shooting to know it was a crapshoot. Better wind that day would have changed the game a fair amount.

I probably shot 10-15 rounds personally with 88ELDs in a 22gt and made 1 or possibly 2 impacts.

I been shooting 1100 yards on public land with a 6 creed. As long as the wind is calm it is basically too easy. I took my GF out who never fired a gun in her life and she hit 10 of 10. I bought a drag bag so I can carry the rifle to a mile or more this winter. I could shoot 5 miles at that spot if I wanted but the gong I think is only 32 inches across. I want to go to Utah for the milk jug challenge! I feel so sad for y'all back east with all those trees in the way and no public land.

I've had my Edge out to 2000 yards in an ELR match with good results. While prairie dog hunting in SD this year we found a place we could get a mile measured out and set up a target. It had rained so we could see no splash to walk into the target and we had very strong crosswinds, but we did find a nice group in the ground about 10ft from the target from my buddy's 300WM.
