Check/Calibration weights in grains?

Are there any options for scale check/calibration weights in grains that are of a higher accuracy than the ones offered by any of the reloading companies? I see weights, even ones with certs, in other units of measure, particularly mg, g, k, etc. Nothing in grains so far.

Danny

If your scale is a bit more precise than the standard RCBS/Dillon etc. check weights then it likely converts from grams to grains (and other conversions). Just use the gram weights and then set the display to grains. If any precision is lost it is less than a very small fraction of a kernel of powder. Probably worth no more than a frog fart of wind drift downrange.

It is for a mechanical beam scale.

I don't think a beam scale need be precise to less than 2/10ths grain. As long as it's repeatable to less than 1/10th grain.

Get three small screws, one at minimum, average and maximum powder charge, case and bullet weights you use labeled what they are. They're your check weights.

why won't the check weights work with an electronic scale just because they came from a store that sells mechanical scales? I don't know what I don't know, I'm curious :)

RCBS makes a set in grains. They're not super-accurate NIST certified, but they do the job and they're inexpensive.

I've got a dime that weighs 35.02 grains. I use it to check my scale (FX-120i) before and during loading sessions. It's very close to my 6BR load weight of 29-ish grains and I feel better "calibrating" at a close weight than at 100 or 50 grams, although I do that occasionally as well. HTH

Take even your cheaper non certified weights to 2 or 3 pharmacies to have weighed and note the weights. I did and all 3 pharmacies were the same, allthough a touch different than the stated weight. I recorded and use the pharmacy's weight as gospel. Figure they have some pretty precision scales.

I thought about taking some of my existing weights, which can't be purchased at the link above, to a local jeweler for weighing/checking.

I have the extended RCBS set.

If your scale is RCBS-grade, then their weights are fine. If it's lab grade (FX-120i type) then what you want is a calibration weight, which will be in grams (typically 50g or 100g).

Certification has never bothered me.

When I set on a load that is in the acceptable range for the caliber, I make a check weight for it using one of a number of tail end runs of soft point bullets by trimming the tip & if necessary, boring it out until it scales up to my chosen load. Then I scratch the "weight" on it & have it for future reference, irrespective of which scale I'm using at the time.

I don't see a need for absolute precision (and expense) in check weights. I don't care if the (eg) 50gr check weight I use is actually 0.1gr off.

I also don't care if my scale says the 50gr weight weighs 50.1gr . . . as long as it always says that. Every time.

IMO check weights need to be durable, non-absorbent, and cleanable so they don't gain or lose weight. They also need to be quite close to the weight they claim, but not precise.
