Centerfire Barrel Tuners/ Muzzle Devices

Erik,

If the barrel is straight at the muzzle, could one not bore the tuner to a few thou larger than the barrel diameter and use the green cylindrical loc tite to install?

That way no threading, machining on the barrel and removeable with a heat gun!

The reason for the threads is to allow precise fine adjustments of the tuner in or out. If you glue it the tuner will serve no purpose as it will be no different than a solid barrel.

I tried it on a 28" barrel, it works just as well.

Erik how can i find out more about these tuners? i shoot IBS Score, 100 & 200 yds. is there any way to talk about this? thanks Allen in KY.

I think the answer is. The same reason that drives all innovation. The search for every advantage. Over the other hammers on the line

You can turn a very small group (load developed) into a one shot type hole. You cut out any verticle and only have to worry about the horizontal. The wind is the only factor then that causes verticle above or below the line. Really shows up in coached shooting when it all clicks.

This year i had a conversation with a tuner maker and what i gathered from it can't improve on what i have. If you have a good barrel the benefits are marginal if any but if you have an average barrel it may help. In the wind only thing that helps is a hummer…… jim

The question is what makes a barrel a hummer? Is it internal dimensions, barrel lenght, harmonics, etc?

Can someone have a hummer and never know it because they did not tune it properly? I believe so. So, what if someone had a hummer but the harmonics are a little off? Well, that's where the tuner comes in.

The bottom line is we don't know, so we try to get as much out of a barrel as we can and then work on reading the wind.

For me, a tuner has done a couple of things.

First, they make the tune window wider.

Second, I can move the tune window onto the velocity rather than moving the velocity into the tune window. It just gives you another degree of freedom in getting to the objective. That is mostly good, but can work against you if you don't work methodically.

Eric, I and i'm sure a lot of other people don't know what makes a hummer barrel. I do know how to test and find out and they are scary good in the wind. They make you look good when anybody else is trying to keep them on the paper….. I used average barrels this year but i did all right,but they shot smaller than any hummer i ever had. Maybe i just learned to load…….. jim

One of the long range guys will have to address that for you. I shoot short range. We mostly don't care about velocity ES.

In theory, that's like what I'm talking about. Tune the window onto a charge that you, for whatever reason, already have.

It won't work with something that is just plain bad. To give an example, I have an IBS VFS setup that liked to be shot H.O.T. hot. I backed off the charge to something that didn't loosen my primer pockets and tuned the window down onto it. Worked great.

I am one of the long range guys,If i can get a gun to shoot in the zero's at 100 yds. what will the tuner do? I use a brake and to hang more weight on the muzzle it will throw the gun out of balance. i shoot free recoil like short range so balance and tracking are everything. My ES is running around 3 SD is 0. This can be improved? My last 4 match agg. at 1000 was 2.8…….. jim

For someone as accomplished at loading and shooting as yourself. Maybe a tuner is of no benefit.
For others it may help.

I played with a tuner on a light gun I had. My experience was a little different. The gun did not really shoot better or worse than without a tuner. One thing I did notice that goes against what everyone repeats is my load window got smaller. My day in day out agg was worse. The days it would shoot, lookout, but then it would shoot lousy. I never noticed that before iI had a tuner or on any other of my rifles. Plus the added weight in the worse place ( aside from Eric Cortinas design). I think they are a phase and we will all try one. Each of us will need to make a decision if we think they help.

If i could see a positive gain i would try one on a good barrel and then i should be able to see a gain,loss or a flat line. I did talk to some HOF. shooters on this and some had to take it off to get them to shoot again. This is what right now stops me, If it's working stay with it. I never thought i would ever use a brake either……. jim

I can't speak to the 17 lb or F class guns. Only on my medium varmint and heavy varmint VFS guns. They obviously work there. Very obviously.

Maybe Eric can speak to it. I'm lucky to have 100 or 200 yards to shoot. Actually shooting an air gun some now to get trigger time...can shoot in my basement anytime. Well, anytime the wife isn't paying attention.
