case ?'s

Gentlemen,
What features are you looking for in a rifle carrying case? What oal rifle do you have for the case? Anything you can tell me in regards to features would be greatly appreciated.TIA

PJ

PJ,
I have several hard cases and any of them will do the job. My least favorite are the Americase cases, they are very durable offer maximum protection but you need a gorilla to carry them for you. They are much too heavy and also very expensive.

My favorite hard case is the two gun SKB case, light and cheap. I fly all over with both my shotguns and rifles and have never had any damage with either cases. Try the big two gun SKB with wheels you will love it.

I use Storm 3300i cases almost exclusively. You can get them from Patriot Tactical Rifles for $215 shipped in black, OD, or tan. They have two folding carry handles, roller wheels, and six easy to open secure latches. These WILL protect your investment even from airline rampies -- I know; I work for one.

GUYS,
The info i'm looking for is. What options you need on a case? I think i have an in to a case manufacturer. If so maybe i can get the product we need instead of what they offer.

PJ,

I prefer to make my own custom fit liners. To achieve this, it is best if the case comes with a 3-piece foam interior. In other words, it should have a lining in the lid, a lining in the base and a 2.5" thick piece of foam "meat" in the sandwich. A two piece interior is no good for this because if you cut through the bottom piece of foam, you are left with bare plastic/metal on the lower half.

All of the foam should be fairly high density closed cell polyurethane - this stuff is more expensive than open cell foam but is seems to last forever and is compatible with oils and solvents. I can't say the same of some of the cheap foam in one of the first cases I ever bought which seemed to rot and go all powdery after not too long.

I use an electric carving knife to cut the foam to a custom fit - this gives a highly professional, smooth and contoured finish. Consider supplying some instructions on how to do this - hacking it up with a utility knife just doesn't look good.

Sell spare pieces of the aforementioned "meat" foam as an accessory. I have several which are cut for different rifles and accessories so I can use the same hard case with multiple liners. These pieces of foam just store flat under the bed at home.

Interlocking convoluted foam is another option for those who don't want to make a custom fit. Whilst the holding power seems fairly good, it can't match a true custom interior for it's ability to keep the parts out of contact with the interior edges of the case. If you do go with a convoluted foam, placing a 0.5 - 1.0" buffer of high density foam around the margins of the case will give extra peace of mind.

Make a case which is long and skinny. Most of the cases long enough to fit a complete rifle with 28+" barrel are so called "double rifle cases" and are needlessly wide if you are only carrying a single rifle. This just adds weight and bulk.

Another thought I had was a stealth option. I'd be interested in a rifle case that doesn't scream "steal me". Perhaps a guitar case or a golf bag that fits and performs like a heavy duty rifle case might work well. Maybe not - I have no idea if these things are considered more or less steal-able???

I like the twin-rifle cases with vertical slots. These don't put any sideways pressure on your scope knobs. Also you don't have one rifle stacked on top of another as with the SKB case. With a metal case, they are heavy enough not to slide around in the back of my station wagon.

Put them on the ground next to your bench and open the lid and the rifles are still protected from side blowing sand. The negative is that they are heavy and quite expensive. You could buy a dozen plastic Doskocil rifle cases for the cost of one metal double-rifle safari case.

Cabelas makes a "Bullet-Proof Safari" case like this and Zeigler Engineering makes an "Expedition box" and a double BR rifle case like this.
