Can't get consistent #s using OAL and a modified case

stool said:
i do not put the case in gently..it goes in firmly and held in place while moving the bullet forward.

i guess you need to get together with another shooter and see if he can spot any issues....

bottom line is i have been using the tool for years, make my cases now, do not buy them, but can always get a solid set of readings from every rifle......

so, if the tool works, and it does, and others can use it, the variable left in the picture is you.

so find a buddy and try again

I've read a lot of your posts here and other forums. I'm wondering by the condescending manner in which you post
Is your real name, RICHARD ???

it was not meant to be condescending...it was meant to point out that the tool works.
and that if a person is having a problem with the tool, it is the person that needs to learn,,,cause the tool is just that, a tool.

go read his last post...i only disagreed with his light touch on the case.....
he describes the correct process, but is getting poor results.........it is him, not the tool.
you have a good day.
maybe someone can volunteer to help him out.
i help several people here..via pm and email....just to stay away from personal attacks that show up in open forums.

this was not meant to be an attack on him.

oops... sorry 'stool I missed it (the band aid method). I was a bit confused.

Funny, I usually get ticked when I see someone obviously is not paying attention to, or skips reading through a thread. And I just did it!

I wear the hypocate hat today, :-[ lol!!

Bowshot here is the method Erik Cortina described for finding the lands. It does not require anyone's tool to get readings so it is labeled a "band aid method" It works very well.

I load a bullet long on a prepped case (same as you use for load development). Apply die wax to bullet and close the bolt. Snap bolt open and extract round. Measure new measurement and that is your JAM. Measure back from there for testing. Do this on three or four cases to verify. Then pull bullets, load powder and primers, and use them for fowlers to keep brass on same rotation as the rest.

how much JAM ??
IT WILL VARY WITH BULLET TYPE.
how many of you have optical comparators to measure the length of the jam marks on the bullet?

precision is possible.
i know when my bullet is TOUCHING the lands.
anything shorter from there is jump, and anything longer is jam.

has anyone volunteered to help this guy ?? anyone local ??
