By the Price Point, What is the MOST Popular Wind Meter Out There Now?

Just a note from personal experience, Kestrel customer service is absoulatey horrible.
I sent a meter in for a possible repair after they said it could be fixed. They charged my CC after an email saying repairs we completed. Received it in the mail in a few days and not fixed. Contained a letter saying unit could not be repaired.
It took me about 6 months to get the charges reversed. Glad the CC company has good customer service.

I replaced the Kestrel with a WeatherHawk Windmate. Much better price.
The only thing that would like to be able to do is change the fields of the main screen.
You have to scroll a couple screens to see the temperature and humidity.

Sounds nice.. but does it fit within the "Price point" parameters?

Anyone know where I can pick up one of the sweet tripod weather vane tops for the WeatherFlow Weather Meter? Or do I buy one for another brand and make it work?

I've recently started using an Eole, and for matches I think it's pretty darned good.

What is different about the Eole is that it is omni-directional, i.e., you don't have to stand there holding it into the wind. I mount mine on top of my scope pole with a cheap walmart flexible tripod. (it has a screw hole in the bottom for mounting on a standard tripod mount)

The Eole lets you set a time over which it will show you the average wind and the max for that time. I used it to good effect putting it up for 20 minutes before my relays in Canada at the Worlds. In pair firing where you cant wait it let me come to the line with a good idea of what the wind range was, at least what it did for the 15 or 20 minutes before I shot. (obviously it has to come down and go into the box before you go to the line)

I've had a Kestral for about 5 or 6 yrs, and I used the Eole more in the months I've had it than I have the Kestral in all that time.

Ok, now I can say that there are three acceptable units. This Eole, which I never knew about, the Dweyer wind meter, and the Windtronic 2, which I have. "Aiming" a wind meter is unacceptable

The Wintronic II must be a popular item.. being that it is on back order?
I think that production is low, or there is limited distribution in the USA, or both. It is a German unit and when I wanted to find one, I had trouble finding it. Creedmoor and Champion Shooter's Supply used to sell them among other places. Creedmoor stopped selling them, and I found it at CSS. I think that the EOLE could be a better idea, as the averaging of speed for a time period seems nice, which mine does not have. Mine is also not backlit, and it seems that the EOLE is.

Does anyone use station data off the satellite to the closest reporting point, usually an airport. Smartphone AB uses this. Doesn't give wind at your exact point but generally close enough.

To do everything the EnnoLogic does, you would need a Kestrel 3500. I needed temperature, barometer, humidity, and wind speed. I would rather have the Kestrel of course, just had to go a less expensive route. Even going with Amazon's price ($47.95), this is about $55 complete with batteries and charger. The Kestrel is nearly 4X as much. And the Kestrel probably is a bit more accurate (?). This has a 10 year warranty. I have accidentally dropped it on concrete and it still works. Not pushing this meter, it just happens to be the least expensive one I could find that does all that I need. Beware, the manufacturer is charging $47 for this but I saw some ads on eBay and Amazon for double the price. It pays to shop.

I did find some specs for comparison:
Specifications
  • Wind speed: ±5%
  • Wind chill: ±1.8°F
  • Temperature: ±1.8°F
  • Relative Humidity: ±3%
  • Barometric Pressure: ±0.05 inHg
  • Pressure Altitude: ±50 ft
And for the Kestrel 3500:
Specifications
  • Wind speed: ±3%
  • Wind chill: ±1.6°F
  • Temperature: +/- .9°F
  • Relative Humidity: ±3%
  • Barometric Pressure: ±0.07 inHg
  • Pressure Altitude: av ±23.6 ft / max +/- 48 ft

I'm starting to believe I need one of these two units. This and a shooters app.

I have a Kestrel, I had it so long I don't even know the number. it never failed me, does temp, humidity and wind speed... all I need and mirage and flags do the rest....... Jim
How much is your “pull the trigger” decision is based on the input from the winds toys vs. the the wind flags?

An idea. I have one of these Acurite weather station units for my home. It would work find outside too. Both pieces can be battery powered. The sensor could be rigged up on a PCV pole with a base, maybe 5-6' from the ground. It reads wind speed & direction, barometer, temperature and % humidity. The pole can be a slip fit with a slip fit base for easy transportation. When not in use, plug it into the wall power supply to keep from draining the batteries. The sensor can be 300' from the monitor. A but bulky but if you have your own range or the ability to set it it up, should work well.

Writing downtime temp. and humidity wind direction and wind speed at the line........ then I put it back in the box......... lol.... Jim

I use the weather meter
the only downside I have found is it say's 100 feet range, more like 45 feet
There are two Bluetooth power setting available in the Weatherflow app. I have ha no problem running it reliably at 75-100 ft on the higher power, but it definitely impacts battery life.
