By the Price Point, What is the MOST Popular Wind Meter Out There Now?

I've recently started using an Eole, and for matches I think it's pretty darned good.

What is different about the Eole is that it is omni-directional, i.e., you don't have to stand there holding it into the wind. I mount mine on top of my scope pole with a cheap walmart flexible tripod. (it has a screw hole in the bottom for mounting on a standard tripod mount)

The Eole lets you set a time over which it will show you the average wind and the max for that time. I used it to good effect putting it up for 20 minutes before my relays in Canada at the Worlds. In pair firing where you cant wait it let me come to the line with a good idea of what the wind range was, at least what it did for the 15 or 20 minutes before I shot. (obviously it has to come down and go into the box before you go to the line)

I've had a Kestral for about 5 or 6 yrs, and I used the Eole more in the months I've had it than I have the Kestral in all that time.

Wade,

Are you using the Kite or the Skywatch?

If you're just using it to calibrate your eyeball to what the range wind flags are doing, then cheaper is better. I happen to own a basic Kestrel left over from my sail boat racing days a LONG time ago. But if I were purchasing one today, I'd buy one on Amazon Prime for less than $20 and perhaps I might even buy the $11 model.

Pretty much what i am doing.. though i might be concerned but weather points maybe later.. not sure yet if i want to go down that road.. i won't be loading any ammo at the range.. In Rimfire, i might consider the weather more so.. but shooting is going pay off more then trying to track the changes through the day.. that is what unlimited sighters are all about to me.. but if i know a thing or two about the wind values to my flag tails.. then that might give me a one up! Most say that if the tails are standing straight out, don't shoot.. but if i understand that speed.. i might be able to learn how to compensate elevation with that respect. In other words.. instead of holding for both wind and elevation, i could just adjust for elevation on the scope and hold for the wind.. or if the Golden Eagle is really true enough.. both and hold center.. but i will use my flags as well for UBR,.. this is where the wind knowledge is going to really play its best.

Not to brage, but our range has free wi-fi! Wearing Bluetooth headphones and setting up targets while listening to YouTube videos is really fun for me. Wether is rocking out our instructional videos, wi-fi at the range is awesome!
I very rarely shoot anywhere w/o a data signal. So if a person has a ballistic app, weather apps, do they really need a wind meter then?? I don't normally shoot past 600 yards. Just mainly snipe coyotes.

I bought one of the cheapies a few years ago. Identical to the $11 one with a yellow cover on Amazon. It seemed to work ok for a while. With these meters, any normal arm movement will make the impeller spin. I noticed after a while it didn't seem to. You could blow into it pretty hard before it would spin. So this was progressive and any readings I took for a while would have been off to some degree until I noticed it. Also every time the battery was changed, it reverted back to metric measurements. You had to take the cover off and use a pin in a hole the back to reset it. As long as it worked, it was fine for wind and temp measurements.

Most of these have a long lanyard maybe 18" long and I let that hang to determine the wind direction so the meters will face directly into it. They will read wind in either direction. As far as temperature and anything associated like relative humidity, holding the meter in your hand very long will give a false reading. Also the meters, including the high-end ones, must not lay on a surface that will transmit heat into the unit or be in direct sunlight. I usually hang mine in a shaded area off my shooting cart for the temp and humidity readings.

I am looking hard trying one of those that Wade posted about, i like the idea of not having to move the meter around to find the wind.. unless you need it to see what the wind direction is.. but if i am right near my flag and it is showing me direction.. then the only thing that i need to know is velocity. Now knowing the other stuff, i am not sure if that is going to be really important.. but seeing trends might make a better knowledge base to go by.. All i know is if it is sunny and a cloud blocks the sun.. don't shoot!

I, too, have a weather meter. I really don't use the wind speed part as I shoot long range BR and wind incrementally down the range is too important for a single number at the gun. I monitor Density Altitude and Temp. and keep records to help in setting my tuner.
In-expensive with my smart phone.

Yeah..i was thinking bout trying to keep a track on alt, temps.. humidity and such.. but i wonder if i would be taking it a bit too far or not.. other than for my own personal enjoyment!

I use posterboard as a target backer and usually just write all the info on them along with the date and keep them for my records. Then if conditions change and/or if you want to run things through a ballistics calculator, you'll have the info to work with.

Doc, good to have data when the untoward occurs. Ex: old Suhl that shot great until the humidity dropped below 40%

Have used the old solar powered Eole for years. Hysteresis at wind speed less than 1-2 mph. Above that is accurate. Helps correlating flags with cross wind speed
