Bullet for the 6BR ?

My barrel is the standard 6br rem..it does not have the extra length
in the chamber,so the bullets can not be seated out as far as some
of the other..It has a 1 in 8 twist...I am just courious as to what some of you are using for bullet's in your standard chambers as well...Hope this question makes sense to you all.Thanks..

Cocopuf,
I have an 8T with the short 6BR chamber also. I am having the best luck with Berger 105 hybrids seated just off the rifling. Sierra 107s and Speer 105s work almost as well and I have some Berger 105 VLDs to try yet.
Good shooting to ya!

Bill

Depends on how far your shooting and what at. I have an 8 twist dasher chambered with a 123 thou freebore reamer to suit the longer bullets and Im jumping 55gr nosler BT's a heck of alot. Shoots ragged holes at 100yds all day long. Rather effective on foxes.

I'm loading the 80 grain Berger Match Varmint to just touch in my .270 neck, approx. 0.70 free bore chamber (PTG 6BR Norma reamer done by Shilen). Shoots lights out if I do my part.

Sounds like a zero freebore chamber. I would use the 90-95 grain bullets. Anything heavier will put the bullet pretty deep in the case and eat up your powder capacity. Any bullets that are lighter than 70g. will result in some severe overspin from that 8 twist. While others may have good results with very light bullets in an 8 twist, you may not experience the same in your rifle. You can get in touch with any of the bullet companies and they will recommend what's best as well.

I have a 1 in 8 twist in 6mmBr and The Berger 105gr VLD's shoot the very best by a long shot. Using 29.6 of Varget and set at .040 of lands Lapua brass and CCI #450 primer. I have a .268 neck sized to .266 The gun shoot sub 1"s 5 shot groups every time.

Since the 8 twist is for the long-heavies, it's surprising that you have short freebore.

I have a similar problem, but it's in a 10 twist set up for mid-weights.

Try the Berger 90 grain boat tail. Very easy to tune. I was using Varget. I can't remember the powder charge off the top of my head, but it was straight from the 6BR page off the home page of this site. I was using 450's. The seating depth that worked was 11 thou into the lands.

Why 11 thou? I use seater die shims to control depth. I was aiming to start at 12 thou, but found 11 thou of shims right away and went with it. Worked well and stuck with it.

The general thought is that with the 8 twist, you have to keep the velocity under 3100 or you will suffer jacket separation problems.

Mine is a Savage Target Model 12 Benchrest w/29" barrel and I shoot strictly 100 yds using Bart's 68 gr Ultra FB's. A friend has the same rifle and he shoot 600 yds - 1K and uses Berger 105's or Sierra 107's.

I have a .070 FB 272 neck. 8.5 twist, chambered by Mickey Coleman. 85 gr Sierra HPBT shoot fantastic. 70 gr Sierra shoot fine also.

That 85 HPBT is the most versatile 6mm hunting bullet going. I've killed a truck load of varmints and deer with it.

My chamber has 85 thou freebore.. It is mostly perfect for the mid weights. The only bullet that I've found that doesn't like it is the BIB 95 FB. It needs 104 thou.

shooting 250 yards bulls eys f class....So far my best has been the berger 68 grainers..Tried the Sierra 107...looked more like a shot gun patteren..lol
The 80's also work pretty decent...Thanks for your replies..

Try the Berger 90 BT. 4895, Varget, 8208 XBR, Reloader 15.

I ended up at 30.7 grains. Of Varget. It's not hot, but it's not a starting load. Start low, work up.

I've also shot the Berger 87 VLD. It's a tad harder to tune. I was shooting 30.5 grains of 8208 XBR. Start low, yadda, yadda.

I'm shooting them in a straight 6 BR, Lapua brass, no turn neck, 2 thou neck tension, CCI 450 primers. This barrel doesn't have a tuner., so I've done a bit more tweaking of the powder charge than I normally would have.

I think that I said it before, but it is a 10 twist for the mid weights. It's actually my son's rifle set up for a 300 yard varmint league.

That bottom target is the 100 yard target from a VHA match at Wabash, IN. I shot from bottom right counter clockwise. You can see where I lose the wind condition on the last two.

It's really not impressive till you know that I had exactly one afternoon at the range to find that load. That 90 BT is very forgiving. For 300 yards and in, it's the Rx.

The 300 is just one. We shoot four relays. One shot at the fly per relay. No sighters. No wind flags. I hit it about one out of four. That is the only time that I centered it up. To be fair, it is the last target of 6 that you shoot, so you do get some shots to help dope the wind.

I'm a club level shooter. Just not enough practice to be better.

But, that's kind of my point about that 90 Berger and the 6 BR. It's stupid easy.

There are lots of other bullets that shoot well in the 6 BR. That one is great at 300, maybe 400, yards or or less in the wind.

I'll have to give those 90's a chance... don't own any at the moment.

In my 8 twist Broughton's (I have 2), the 107 SMK is crazy accurate from 100 to 300 yards. Don't do well at 1k though. For me, the 107's are very forgiving... if you shoot larger than a single ragged hole at 100yards, you're doing something wrong!

side note* beyond 300 yards, No bullet has shot better then the 105 Amax out of my Broughton 8 twist barrels. It's a shame they stopped making them (temporarily?). My smallest groups at 300yds, and at 1K yds, have been with the Amax. Sort them by base-to-ogive length, cull the outliers, and go have fun!

I have bought a couple of 6 BRDX reamers, one for a 10 twist with mid-weights and another for 8 twist with the long-heavies.

No particular reason for the BRDX other than that they had exactly the right freebore (104 and 115, respectively), had dies already and were available at the right price.

I look forward to giving the 8 twist a try with the 104-107 grain bullets. It sounds like a forgiving all-around combination.

I'm going to build another 10 twist with 104 freebore for the BIB 95 FB on a Savage PTA in an absolutely gorgeous Baby Tracker that my friend Dave Moore made for me. I'm going to shoot it in UBR modified class. It'll be a hoot.

On one of my Broughton's, I punched out the 6BR chamber to a Dasher. I did it by hand with a tap handle :) There's a thread on this forum with pics of how I did it. lol!

Before and after the re-chamber, the Amax was the best bullet for me at long range. Although I'll admit I have not put enough time into load development in the dasher chamber to prove otherwise. In practice, I have a 3.5" 5-shot group at 1K yds! I kept that little piece of paper, and hung it on my fridge :)

Also, something I almost forgot... The Broguhton 8 twist barrels are actually about 8.25 twist (verified with the primitive cleaning rod method). The 105 Hybrids and the 105 Amax's are the only bullets that don't "shotgun pattern" at long range. Still get fliers with the hybrids more so than the Amax's.

I have not tried lighter bullets in the 8 twist barrels yet, but I intend to. I have some Berger 80's, and 95 gr VLD's that I haven't had much time to play with. I haven't had much time for shooting in general, so who knows when I'll get out to play with all that stuff :(

Good to know on the Broughton. I buy most of my barrels from Tim. Might have to go elsewhere for the 8 twist.
