Bronze Brushes Don't Hurt Barrels.

Anything used carelessly can damage a barrel. Maybe the discussion should be more about technique? I have used bronze brushes on every barrel I have ever owned, never hurt one. Same goes for iosso or jb. You just cant be careless or excessive. Obsessing over getting the barrel back to bare steel leads to that.

Well, even though this thread didn't generate much discussion, :p I'm of the notion from what has been posted that a bronze brush won't hurt the barrel, but the improper use of a bronze brush can. I like the idea of using a brass core bronze brush for obvious reasons. I appreciate all who have constructively posted!

My basic takeaways:

Bronze brush use with oil/fluid cleaner
Abrasives use with a patch

I only take about 25 strocks before cleaning my brass brush with brake cleaner this may be what some are calling residue and if you keep stroking with a dirty brush you may cause problems.

It's not a carbon fiber vs ss rod issue. It's about debris on either one. I did a test. Trust me...carbon fiber won't hurt your barrel. It might break, go through your wrist in splinters and you might bleed out...but it won't hurt your barrel. In fact, after my test, carbon fiber rods are my preference and no, I don't have a death wish for myself or my barrels. I had a video of the test but it's been a while and I doubt I can find it. It wasn't even CLOSE! CF will not hurt your bbl.
Exactly my thinking.... I use all three it depends on which one is closest.... I think the main thing is wiping the crude off the rod and not shoving that dirty rod back down the barrel.... People will be shocked at what gets on a cleaning rod once they start wiping them down during cleaning.....

You need to watch Primal Rights video of him torturing a barrel with brush and drill to show it doesn't cause damage. It's not something I expected from him but it's a neat short video to see.

I wish he would do that with some abrasives on it which is what we know to be the only way a brush causes damage

What does the rod have to do with anything? The oil/crude runs off the bristles onto the rod. My rod doesn't make contact with anything. If your rod is making contact all the time, that is a technique problem.
