Break-in for a Rem. heavy barrel ?

I understand that Rem. uses the hammer forging method to make their barrels ??? , Do these barrels require any more or less "break-in". Barrel in question is a 308 varmint .

I have 2 factory remmys. One has visual drill marks in the bore clean to the end of the barrel. 600 shots later it is still a copper mine. Sent pics to Remington and they wanted it back but it is a hunting rifle that shoots three inch groups at 300 yards so I kept it. Taken several deer with it.

Latest is a 700 AAC-SD. 20" heavy barrel. I followed the same break in routine of my custom barrels, clean after every shot for ten shots, then after every 5 till 50. Have about 180 rds through it now and it shoots unbeleivable for a factory barrel, fouls very little, cleans very easy.

So , guess it is a roll of the dice???

My break-in is remove the barrel, replace with a good aftermarket barrel that shoots a bullet where you want it to go. After taking enough copper out of the last one to get a few bucks at the scrap yard, I swore off Remingtons. I've got a couple other Remington horror stories but since this is for break-in, I'll post those elsewhere.

The last factory Rem that I broke in was a 204 ruger. It was the first factory I had done in a couple of years. Totally amazing .... after only THREE "shoot one and clean" cycles it was as good as my last 5 custom's (3 Kriegers and 2 Brux's). Litterally run 3 wet patches through after 30 shots and it is CLEAN. Not a lick of copper. Shot just a shade under 1/2 inch groups at 100 with factory ammo!!

Now, is this because it is a fantastic tube? Probably.

Is it because I am comparing it to customs that shoot very long, heavy for cal bullets and the 204 was shooting 32 grn pills? The "Less bearing searface = less copper fowling" concept? Also probably.

But I offered the owner a good pile of cash for it and he declined.

I guess I should have told him that it was a pile of junk!!! :o ;D >:(

Drill marks ?? going to rain tomorrow, good time to search "hammer forged bbl. making.
Guess the only way to tell is shoot/clean/shoot/clean thing, good thing I've got a bucket of dud tracers, some 4759, an understanding neighbor and a big tree 10' off my back porch.

I've had luck using the Tubb's fire lapping kit on these factory "stinkers" especially if you don't want to/ can't afford to re barrel the rifle . It's an option I wouldn't overlook . On a factory gun I honestly don't feel it'll hurt and on mine helped - cleaning as well as accuracy in a few .

no matter what brand or type of bbl. ,,when "breaking in" I let it tell me how it is going,,,clean every shot for the first 5,,,the every 3 for five times,,,,look for copper,,,if its there work to get it out,,,after 20 shots with conventional bullets "most" of the break in should be over,,,,Roger

1+ for Tubb bullets ..used on my old 788 308..made a big differance in cleaning and group sizes..Danny
