Brake for a 6mm caliber cartridge?

I have a few of the Shrewds, a few Harrell's, a few of the Ron Bartlett's and a bunch of the Witt Machine brakes. Hands down - the Witt Machine are the most effective. They are a side discharge, available threaded or machined to your barrel specs for clamp-on.

Most shooting disciplines forbid muzzle brakes because of the offensive side blast.

If making recoil mild enough to be comfortable is the goal, the most caliber less than 6.5mm really don't need a brake. However, if you are trying to follow the bullet to impact in your optic, then a lot less recoil is acceptable and even on a 6mm a brake can be useful.

I personally haven't been able to watch bullet impact through an optic on anything bigger than .22LR. Not sure if I'm flinching or or a wimp or what, but even though I can shoot 6.5cdmr all day, I have no ability to see the bullet flight regardless of optic.

ANd now that I'm switching to a high power optic (golden eagle), I expect that won't improve.

I don't believe they are legal for any kind of benchrest shooting. As much as I like them, I would not want to be sitting next to a bench where one was being used.
Well your wrong. 1000 yd bench rest allows muzzle brake and most local shoots do also.. I hate muzzle brakes, if you can't handle it don't shoot it. At most ranges the benches are not far enough apart that you are not disturbing the shooter beside you. I guess shooting a 50 lb gun can't get rid of enough recoil, eh? Of course when you suggest all the muzzle brake guns shot on separate relays there is a course of, "Oh no, we can't do that"". Well your interfering with others so I seen hat as rude and inconsiderate. Now, some realize it causes others a problem so they will shoot quick allowing you time or alternate shots with you. But in reality that is effecting both shooters.
So I suppose I have made some folks mad, but guess what, I'm old enough that I don't care.

I totally agree with your comments. I have 1 target rifle with a muzzle brake,(6.5x47L) and it will be my last. In fact, I plan on shooting it this year without the brake. If the recoil is not to my liking without the brake, then I will re-barrel to 6BR. I wish the groundhog matches would stagger relays with/without brakes.

VIAS, had them on 6mm, 6.5mm, 30 cal..my WSM with out is unbearable, With it.. manageable , even for a small frame guy..like me.
Have a 6.5 listed for sale.

Dogdude, this is not directed at you per se. My contention since brakes came around is shoot what you can handle. If you can't handle it go a different direction.I hear guys complain because shooters waiting to shoot , cleaning , whatever, are talking disturbing them while they shoot. But it's ok for them do shoot a cannon with a brake and interfere with the guy on either side. But heaven forbid, don't suggest making them shoot on relays together by themselves. You know why, the guy with a Dasher with a brake doesn't want a 300WSM with a brake on either side of him.So maybe some day the rule will be you must have a brake so every one is equal. It will be called the Democratic Socialist Equal Blast for All Shooting Bill. End of rant.....till next time.

I am going to preface this by saying that I don't compete in any serious BR matches but our local one allows brakes. I used to hate brakes with a passion, I always thought they were just so obnoxious. Over the last few years, my opinion has done a complete 180. Just about every rifle I own has one now. The ability to shoot even large calibers while spotting you're own hits on targets especially the ones on four legs is a huge advantage over not having one.

Jeff, at W-Port the benches are about 18 ft apart, and with the muffs I use all I hear are range commands..and I'm NOT taking the brake off my WSM!!!

End of rant..till next time

Never knew that you were a Democrat Socialist but I have never heard you crying about the fact that because you don't like brakes, everybody else should change. On more than one occasion have sat between 300 WSM's and to be honest, never noticed a difference, guess my focus is better than most. Your original answer was to the O.P. while some others were way to the left. My answer would be a Dasher I would brake while my 6MM Bra is not and I don't intend to at this time, anything larger, brake it, they absolutely do make a big difference! Hope everyone is staying safe, whether you brake or not.:)

Dogdude I agree not so bad at Wport but few ranges are that well set up. I have a solution for you, change the WSM to something managable.

Well I understand where you are coming from, but you need to understand not ever range is spaced as wide as Williamsport, Like Harry Jones is 2 feet apart. .... Watch the air and smoke from the brakes and where is a bullet most affected at the muzzle. You double with a guy with a brake beside you, and it will move the bullet. I will say WP. is the best of them all for spacing between benches, but I didn't think it was 18 ft..... jim

Yeah, the brake on my contender barrel is obnoxious. I don't shoot it with spectators. Don't feel the need to impress anyone.
It definitely ventilates the gases, tho. I think it's designer has since decreased the diameter of his porting vents. this one will upset the folding lawn furniture nearby.
All that being said, It's a heck of a lot of fun to shoot! Note: that rynite buttstock is filled with lead to detent the recoil a little!
