Bore scoped

I have a gun barrel that has been regularly used for 52 years. Thought it would be a good idea to get it borescoped. Went to a reputable gunsmith here in central Texas and he explained in great detail what would be done. OK, let's do it! He had me purchase a bore solvent called Gavilyte-G. I was instructed to administer the solvent 16 hours before scoping, kinda like you do with Wipe Out( which would be a more fitting name for this stuff-it removed carbon fouling, copper fouling, powder fouling and possibly a tonsil). The following morning I go to the doctor......I mean the gunsmith's shop. He tells me I should be asleep while he bore scopes the barrel. Seemed odd but I never pass on a chance for a nap. When I awoke the gastro intestinal...I mean the doct... Damn it, THE gunsmith said the barrel was in great shape given it's age and an estimated round count over 19,000 rounds ( I never thought about keeping a log book on this particular gun so round count might be low). He said rifling looked good and the bore was relatively shiny. I was then instructed not to run any hot or high pressure loads. Was also told that with proper use and care would not need borescoping for 5 years. Two thumbs up and a grin!

Been keeping the Tums and Rolaid people in business for over 40 years. Constant heartburn that the doctors just passed off as eating too much spicy food and age. About a year ago my NEW doctor said that was BS and sent me to be scoped (other end than you folks). Turned out I had inflammation from my esophagus to the exit from my stomach. One pill a day and I was eating burritos the next day and no antacids in a year! Just saw my doctor yesterday and told her I could have waited if I had known I was going to buy a Teslong. She laughed and then had me write down the info. Her dad is a shooter and she knew what would be his Christmas present this year. Another good deed!

I just stick a piece of the bullet in a brown bag and send it off for offsite evaluation. That way I keep my gun at home ( in the safe of course) and still get to use it when needed . I've got problems , my gun has problems with anesthesia.

Did that borescope job cost 2000.00.

Had my bore scoped. Photos came out fine. Smith's administrative staff called me 4.5 years later and said it was time to have my chamber checked again. Frigging cleaning regimen is a real pain in the ass, but I did it anyway. Got that sucker up on the bench, then the Smith comes over. We chat for a second and he asks why I am there - says the chamber did not need to be inspected for another 5 years! Gives me the option to leave or still have it checked. Really? Did not clean that darn thing for nothing so get it done, which he did. Told me 'see you in 10 years.'

The way i see it is if the bore has problems like rust pits there is nothing they will do about it so why even get it checked out and start the worry? The pits grow so slow the rest of the gun will rust and whither away before they cause issues. Save yourself some embarrassment and stress and just skip that particular inspection.

My bore had a piece of cauliflower about 3/4" in diameter hanging from the lands...Smith got er done with a hot lasso and gave me a tattoo to mark the spot while he was at it . I am now a firm believer in having that bore checked on a regular schedule...every 5 years.

PS He has a real nice scope, images were very high quality.
