Bolt action handgun

Randy, those are some nice pistols you put together.

I've blown up the picture of the 10/22 style as far as I can and then used a magnafying glass on it. Would you be willing to share the details of what you used to build it. Do you use it at Topstraps matches?
Thanks
Accurate Rifle Systems chassis, Feddersen Action, Kidd bolt, Kidd trigger and McGowen Precision Barrels 14 twist Bentz chamber 16” barrel. I will be using some at TopStraps this coming season.

Undesignated and it can be billed and listed as a pistol. There are several action makers that will make sure you get it as a pistol.
Theres a reason kelbly makes the cub, remington makes the XP, savage makes the stryker, ruger makes the charger.

I would guess the open retail market.
All I can tell you is I know of several folks with what most would call rifle actions, that are in pistol mode all legal and with in the parameters of the law. I know of three guys that built bolt action pistols on long action 700’s. XP’s have gotten out of hand for what they are worth and have been for years.

Savage pulled a Remington trick, build it and they will come attitude. Little to no input from handgun shooters, IHMSA being the largest market. Then Remington made another stab at it with their modular tactical rig.

Sure they will put another name on it because it is different.

There are black angus and red angus, both being angus but they are still cattle and all bovines, all referred to as “beef”.

Build an SP out of anything you want.
Going all the way back to July 25,2011, ATF said 26" OAL with at least a 16" barrel it's "STILL a rifle", no matter what it looks like.
I keep a copy of that in my rang bag, just in case.

The only reason i casually mention this everytime this comes up is your neighborhood ATF guys are not going to chase down a 4473 you filled out 10yrs ago to see if it was classified as a pistol every time it was sold. If an atf guy sees you at a range with a normally rifle classified action such as a defiance rebel or a remington 700 made into a pistol you will go to jail if they decide they want to use their power, and the burden of proof will be on you to prove you didnt make a rifle into a pistol. But im sure itll be fine, the atf is not known to harass legal gun owners.

Dusty,

Is building a pistol off a bare (unbuilt) Remington 700 action or any other typical bolt action rifle action any different than building a pistol on an AR 15 lower? I’ve seen that done all the time with no concern about the ATF’s classification on whether a lower was designated as a pistol or not.

An AR is too hard to keep up with, but they KNOW remington never made a 700 pistol (hence the XP). They know ruger never made a 10-22 pistol so when they see one they assume it was a rifle manufactured into a pistol. They are trained to look for the third hole on an AR and other conversions such as “sawed off” weapons since they are dangerous.

If you pull up ATF 4473 and go down to line 24 you will see a new action is neither a rifle or a pistol. It is listed as other.
So if you buy a new 700 action and make it into a pistol, are you willing to bet your freedom that the fudd ATF guy picking his nose on the next lane at the range is going to go hunt down your 4473 or take your word for it?
