repeating action for a dasher?

Hope I dont Highjack this thread...

For my application I need 100% extraction and Ejection. No exceptions Or I might as well not have it. My Rifle is a Big Horn Arms action which if you havnt seen one is a Remmy Foot print with a Savage style Floating Bolt head Remmy style trigger. They took what they thought was all the best features out there and incorperated into there action.
Mine is set up for NRA Across the course shooting which includes the two Rapid fire stages of ten round shots. It has to Feed, Extract and eject flawlessly our you might as weal not go to the match. You would have wasted a day and all the prep work prior to going.
This set up works flawlessly with a longer case, but like you guys are pointing out the Ejector is already fully or almost fully extended right before the fired casing exits the port. So it barely clears the ejection port or flips back into the action. Currenlty it feeds and Extracts flawlessly in a Ellesio R5 Stock. Just Ejection is not 100%.
If I take my small round file and extend the roll pin groove on the ejector farther down, that will allow the Ejector to protrude more and hopefully apply more pressure to the case as it tries to exit the port.
Really like the action as it is built like a Tank. It cycles nice and smooth even during a hard side load during fast bolt cycleling which was the problem with my Remington 700/ PTG bolt that this action replaced. The R700 PTG bolt was useless in my application with all its bolt bind.

This short case can sure cause issues some times.... If it wasnt such a joy to shoot I might give up on it. Naaa.

Thank you to everyone who had some good ideas.

RT, just to be clear... so what your saying was that with a rem 700 action you were unable to resolve it and get it cycle 100% of the time? .... even with the ptg bolt? What percent of the time was it reliable? which extractor did you have on the ptg bolt, do you know? thanks

Sorry I should have expalined that a little better. So ill do it now.

It wasnt the Extraction, or Feeding on the Remington that was the issue. It was the fact that the new bolt would bind up when cycling the bolt. In a single shot application ( which is what it was origionaly) there is NO issues. Try to run the bolt fast which adds a little SIDE preload on the bolt handle and bolt body while the Bolt is all the way back picking up a round and it would just flat out lock up while trying to push th ebolt forward... In my game that needs to be super smooth. I dont have time to be jigglin and bumpin the bolt around. It has to go butter smooth. Hence the change to the Big Horn action.

I purchased a stripped Short action about 2004 and installed a PTG bolt, Flutted, Coned bolt, Sako Extractor, Ejector, Holland Firing pin, spring&shroud. Its intent at the time was a Ellisio R1 for Prone slow fire only. Worked Great in 6BR. When it was converted for XTC shooting is when I had Issues in about 2009 ish. Finally got pissed and ordered a Big horn action.

For a general shooting rig i believe you will be fine. I have a certain particular application that mostly does not apply to most folks. My left hand and arm are in the sling and my right hand runs the bolt while the gun stays in the sholder... This causes me to put pressure side ways on the bolt. Hope I didnt give the impression that the PTG/R700 is a bad set up.. That is not the case as I shot it that way for about 5 years with a pile of Mid Range National records in 2007 to 2010.

Hope I explained it so you can see my issue that may not apply to most.

Russ, I feel your pain - here's what I did to avoid issues. Built myself an Eliseo R5 in 6BR several years ago, using a Pierce TG action. Gary's magazines feed flawlessly, and the Pierce's fluted bolt is very slick, and runs great. The fluting on the Pierce bolt isn't the typical deep fluted pattern; rather it's got spiral flats machined around the bolt body. Also, I use Tru-Kote Bolt Magic lube on the bolt - just a tiny dab on a fingertip applied to the bolt body makes quite a difference.

But I still had the occasional 'flip & sit' ejection failure if I didn't run the bolt very briskly - and the Pierce bolt has a Sako-style extractor. IIRC, I did remove the ejector plunger and mill the slot to allow the plunger to set farther forward. So, even with a custom action, modified ejector, & Sako extractor, there are still issues when running cases as short as the BR. However, I can recall only one alibi during sitting rapids, that was due to me getting a little crossed-up and not running the bolt as quickly as I should've.

All that aside, one of my friends has built himself three 6 Dashers on SA 700s, and has had no issues with ejection in any of them. He uses GreTan reamers to ream the bolt raceway straight, then buys slightly oversize PTG custom bolts with Sako-style extractors, modifies the ejector plunger to extend farther forward, and runs AICS 308 magazines in B-O DBM. His application for these rifles is practical/tactical matches, and I don't recall ever seeing him have a problem during a match. What's more, he sold the first two Dashers he built, and the guys running them haven't had any problems either. So it can be made to work.
