Bob Green Comparator Questions

On Bob Greens website he shows the BGC Bullet Comparator with dial indicator at the top of the "New Products" page and at the bottom of the page the caliper tool.

My questions are:
1) Is the BGC a stand alone tool or do you need an arbor press to operate it?
2) Will any decent dial indicator work with it?
3) Does the caliper tool do the same operation (bullet comparator) or is it strictly a cartridge base to bullet ogive comparator?
I would call him and ask these questions but it's New Year's Day! No one is open today.o_O

1 - Yes a stand alone, and No press needed
2 - Yes any indicator with the same diameter shaft
3 - No, it is an ogive comparator

I have 2 of Bob’s tools; a 6mm and a 7mm. As great a tool as they are, I will warn you up front that they require quite a bit of touch to perform repeatibily. You are measuring very minute differences.

Originally I held the tool in the palm of my non-dominant (left) hand and used the thumb on my dominant (right) hand to insert the bullet being tested. More recently, I believe I’ve gotten better results by letting the tool lie flat on my bench, stabilizing the dial end with my left hand and using the forefinger of my right hand to insert the bullet.

You MUST insert the bullet each time with as similar an amount of force as you can muster. Otherwise you will find that you can swing the reading many division simply by pressing harder or softer on the bullet.

Good luck!

Exactly as I found about using Bob's comparator. Good product!

What I do with mine is stand the bullet upright and slide the comparator over it and let the weight of the tool do it’s thing.

I agree it’s a great tool. That said I’m to lazy to use it due to volume needed. So if anyone needs one in 6.5, I would sell mine with the indicator.

I would take $200 shipped if anyone is interested.

I also believe this to be more consistent, especially if sorting a bunch of bullets. My brain is unable to make my finger hold the same amount of pressure.

I agree with the comments above and agree it is a good tool and worthwhile to use. Iit does take some trial and error to get the "feel" down.

Good Shooting

Thanks for the reply.
What size is the shaft? Or, what size dial indicator will fit?

I will also add I have sorted bullets by oal to within .003 and put them into bins say 1.503-06 and then 1.507-1.510 that’s a .07 difference in oal but when checking the bto with the comparator they are usually all within .003, so my thinking on this head banging stuff is bto is probably more important than oal.
