Bullet Sorting Tool

I think bozo699 you are correct, the most important aspect of these tools is that they measure the relative length of the bearing surface and not the exact length of the bearing surface.

For the tools to do the latter, they would have to start and stop measuring at the exact location the bearing surface start and stop which I think would be impossible to do since if the diameter of the tool is the diameter of the bearing surface, the bearing surface would slip inside the tool making measurements impossible.

So for any measurement to be done, the measuring tool has to have a smaller diameter than the diameter of the bearing surface i.e. it would sit on that slope which would be the ogive of the bullet in the front and the sloop of the boat tail at the back.

How far you bear down on the tool will also affect the length since it is basically sitting on a bit of a slope on both ends and with the softness of brass, the amount of force you put on it will determine how much you push into the brass. So with those two facts in mind, how well the tool control the clamp force on the measuring device is a key factor to obtain consistent measurements.

Price that Mark King quoted me a half hour ago was $180. This includes stand, indicator, and one set of bushings. This price did not include shipping.

I just got off the phone with Mark and came in here to post this. I ordered one anways, since I think its the best thing going.

Mark is a great guy to talk to, I really enjoyed our conversation.

John Buhay and Mark King are serious competitors that shoot at Williamsport. John used to make the comparitors and now he changed jobs and can no longer make them. He gave all his stuff to Mark. John used to make them for Tubbs and maybe for Shehane. It is one of the best out there. Now Mark sells them. Matt

I went ahead and ordered one too. I had the Tubb BSC on my wish list for quite awhile and then I got to reading this thread. 140 would have been a lot better to me though.

Did you happen to catch the price on extra bushing/die set ups? I only ordered 6mm for now.

Tanner,
I must have gotten lucky my invoice from 1/15/12 is as follows

1 JB COMP 6MM unit price 150.00 amount 150.00
1 Shipping 15.00 15.00

Total $165.00

I believe Mark told me $50 per additional inserts.
Wayne.

Lucky, lucky, lucky.

I guess I better buy this stuff before prices are even more inflated. He told me the suppliers of parts raised the prices on him.

The Sierra bullet guys use this tool, what about Speer?

Also you might want to edit your email address that is posted above, web crawlers search for email addresses to spam. You probably don't want a bunch of junk email. Instead of the @ symbol use [at], that should do the trick. Just a tech savvy trick I learned in school.

Thanks again Wayne!

Good to see I'm not the only one that has their mind at the loading bench. ;D Great Thread!! Now I think all I have to do is come up with a 3rd job, and I might be able to clean up my wish list :o Gotta love gadgets and tools!

Lol...it never ends!

To have a proper sized tool (die) to measure bearing surface it would have to match barrel spec's, EG 6MM has either .236 or .237 land height, if the holes are at these spec's they will set at the ogive contact point and boattail release point to give actual bearing length.
If these holes aren't perfectly round or of different size they can give different readings and are only acting as comparators for the bullets your working with and should be keep as a set. If you change either one the measurements will probably change.
Just my .02 Gary

Interesting. The Sinclair looks a lot like the one Tubbs use to sell for somewhat less money. You usually get what you pay for, so it would be nice to know what the differences are.

Mike

Judging by the pictures of the Sinclair uses a tiny verticle dial mount post. The king uses a beefy machined 1" post. Not sure if it makes much different or not. I do know the tolerances on the king unit is tight...the dial mount fits tight with no slop.

Are their any practical differences (beyond possible ergonomics) between the Mark King and Green rifle tools? It looks like both measure the differences between the base and the ogive.

YES Kings tool makes comparisons on the bearing surface length. Greens tool makes comparisons of the area between where the bullet contacts the seating stem and where it contacts the rifeling. It's variances here that will cause seating depth variance.
Larry

Thanks Larry. I'll give Bob a call this week. It is a complete mystery as to how that measurement is made. I use a Hornady OAL tool that gives the length of the case plus the bullet to the lands. I assume in a similar ways that you need some sort of measurements from the gun and a bullet to make that comparison.
