Better accuracy

ok.the cal ime using at the moment is a 243 Ackley in a RPA with a 26 inch Walther barrel..ime using the 105 grain Amax for long range, fox and vermin.it shoots around the half inch to be honest, some groups are well under but some slightly over to..i believe it should be under all the time,,ive used a 6ppc for 15 years and may be ime after the same accuracy .ime seating the bullet at 2.700 COL which 99 percent is kissing the lands with 44 grains of vit 165...i know this load is slightly on the weak side for the Ackley but it seems nice to shoot doing around 3050 ftps or just under

I had a 243 Ackley for a while, but it didn't have the twist for 105 A-Max. I have used the 105 A-Max in other rifles and I do find them a bit inconsistent, especially batch to batch. Reading on here I get the impression that if I analysed the boxes of bullets I could achieve better results by sorting my 105 gr A-Max.

I don't want to sort the bullets, so for top performance in matches I'm slowly looking at Lapua Scenars and Bergers, while retaining the A-Max for general practice. N165 sounds a good pick to me, but again trying other powder/primer combinations may yield improvements.

I liked my 243 Ackley.

Have fun.

I've shot several hundred 105 Amax thru a 6br and a 6 Dasher.
From my experience if your gettin 1/2" groups and few under and a few over. That's about the best I ever got with the Amax. Just to much weight and bearing surface variance. Ok for hunting.
The Berger or Barts or another custom bullet IME will give better consistent results you are looking for

"Women and kids are the bet students to teach." Absolutely.

Over the years I have helped a lot of fellows with their bench shooting of ordinary, non competition rifles. Pretty much all of the time I have been able to improve their results. Usually, when I have observed the same fellows shooting a couple of months later, they have completely forgotten what worked, and are back to their old bad habits. Perhaps 20% will have made a permanent change for the better.

As I see it, men, especially those who have been shooting for some time, think that they know how to shoot, when in most cases they really do not. Not only do they have the additional burden of bad habits to overcome, but on top of that, many have ego issues that get in the way.

Give me a beginner every time, and in particular, a woman who has a genuine desire to learn how to shoot, and is not afraid of firearms. They do not generally have the bad habits or the ego issues, which makes for much faster progress.

What I have found works the best when teaching guys who have been doing it wrong for a long time is tell them why the change is needed. Most importantly is to explain how they can tell they are doing it correct.

Granted different shooting needs different rules. Most have problems going back and forth.

i was only asking a question to see if i could get better accuracy with a caliber ime not experienced with,as with reloading your learning every day ...looks like i won,t be asking any more....thanks for the replys from the help full ones...Simon..looks like you ridgeway can load the perfect bullet every time and put it through the same hole as well, but ime afraid you lack one thing that i defiantly have, social graces and good manners....

I am using 49g of H-1000 with 105 HyBreds doing 3150 with no bad signs. That much H-1000 with out a drop pretty much fills her up and is an "easier" type of powder to run and may extend your barrel life. My "spot " is 3k off with the seating......Best of luck....I have had 2 243AI's I guess I have been fortunate enough that they shoot in the 1's-2's & 3"s all the time. Not the round for close BR but perfect for longer range VBR and other like comps. Or killing about anything that would stroll across the property.... 8)

I don't do so much LR shooting anymore, so I find myself tending more and more toward the .223 Rem.

In addition, all my current rifles employ SAAMI chambers, so some of the more intensive accuracy tweaks are probably unlikely to yield huge accuracy benefits for my rifles.

Mostly, I stick to the 'necessary minimum steps' required to produce a reliable functioning cartridge once load development has been performed. Doing them with a set rhythm and attention to detail often helps the most,.

If accuracy wanes, I check the crown and consider a crown reconditioning.
