James, as you mentioned, what one considers a great value might depend on the shooting Discipline that one is involved in.
As you know, my primary game is Short Range Group and Score. The single most important feature that is a MUST for those Disciplines is a scopes ability to hold point of impact shot after shot.
This generally holds true for 100 and 200 yards.
At this years Tack Drive, (300 meters), I mounted a Nightforce 15x55 variable that has proven to be a great scope. However, when the sun finally came out Sunday for the final two matches, I could not see my 6mm bullet holes and could barely make out any lines on the target due to the horrendous mirage.
Granted, my eyes are in bad shape, but not that bad.
Bart was using one of the big Valdada variables. I did not get to look through it, but Bart swore he could see well enough to make out the lines and see his bullet holes. This is a $3800 scope.
So for next year, I will have to make a decision as to “value”. Am I going to make the best bullet I can, get the rifle shooting at a competitive level, and drive 19 hours only with the hope the horrible mirage stays at home.
Or bite the bullet, (pun intended), and spend the $3800+ dollars for a scope that I I’ll use at one match, since it is too heavy at 4 pounds to mount and make weight on any other rifle I shoot the rest of the year.
