Best custom action to build a 17FB and a 20 VT with

I am starting a couple builds. I already have my barrels and reamers. As far as actions go the 17 FB will be a repeater and 20 VT a single shot. I want my actions to be a Rem 700 clone. What ones would you choose and why?? Added both of these setups will be prairie dog/ ground squirrel guns. They will be used in the field.
Are you sure that you want it to be a 700 clone, or even a real 700, for that matter? I have a 700 that was sold by Remington as a true 17 Fireball and I am not really impressed by a short action set up for a Fireball. I really think some smaller action would be better.

I like Jim Bordens stuff. Tommy Mc

I wouldn't use a custom action. The absolute Rolls Royce action for either of those calibers is the Sako L461 action. That's what I used for my Vartarg. I looked at the Bat SV, but have zero regrets using the Sako. Put a custom trigger in it. Haven't looked back.

Listen to this advice!

I had my first 20 Bobcat built on a Sako L461 Vixen action. Chambers like a dream. For my second one, I could have used a Cooper Model 21 action, but nobody told me not to use the Stiller Predator action I had. It takes bolt manipulation that is learned to get it to chamber without issue. Big mistake on my part.

What is the difference in the boltface?
The difference in the bolt face is the location of the extractor. Looking at the bolt face, the extractor for the 223 is @ 11:00 and for the Fireball it's at 9:30. The reason for this was to aid in extraction since the 221 FB case is so short.

A 223 bolt will work but the extractor location tends to push the case upward into the action. If your shooting single shot its a non event but Remington 700's in 221 FB and 17 FB were repeaters. The action is slightly different too regarding the bullet guide area.

You can google it and search the images and you should be able to find them so you can take a look.

I know the extractor location is different ive got both, but when people refer to differences in boltface its the size of the bolt face

Dimension size wise, they Remington 700 bolt faces are the same. But the location of the ejector is located differently for the Fireball for functional purposes and that makes it different in my view which is why I brought it up.

Will a 223 bolt work for a Fireball case; yep but if it's a repeater it could have ejection issues which is why Remington had to change it because of the shorter case length or so I read somewhere several years back when I was building a 20VT.

On the second question, yes, there is differences in the feed ramp area between the two actions. Since my 20VT is built on a Fireball action I can't say what the issue is/was but like the bolt differences of the bolt ejector location I imagine It has to do with functioning as a repeater.

I have a 20 VT on a BAT SV and love it.
