Best custom 700 action?

I
Nice. I would prefer the shouldered prefit versus the barrel nut, as I think it's hideous and just reminds me too much of a Savage lol.

Also not sure if I'd need a single or double ejector? Don't know the difference there either. Or is that just the bolt face for like say a RUM based case?

So when it asks what bolt nose you want, it lists semi cone (standard) or recessed (remage) I'm not sure what that means, or what I would want to get? I want a barrel chambered by my smith first and foremost, with the 2nd option later down the road for prefits. Can you do prefits on the semi cone (standard) or just the recessed (remage) which I'm assuming IS for prefits?

I would think that wording would mean that the standard would take shouldered barrels by your gunsmith whether he had your action in hand or just going by its guaranteed spec measurements. The remage would be barrel nut type setup like Savage.

I just checked out the PVA site. Some nice looking stuff on there for sure. I do however prefer cut rifled barrels from Bartlein, BRUX, and Krieger with finish lengths of 28" One reason I prefer the blanks and have my smith chamber them.

I still have a lot of questions and research to do. This project won't happen for another year anyway, so I have plenty of time to save and get it all figured out, hopefully!

All you guys have been a huge help so far, I do appreciate it!

PVA does 28” finish lengths. I have a couple of them. I have also used a lot of Bartlein and Krieger barrels over the years and you won’t be able to tell the difference with an Osprey. The cut rifled used to be my choice also as the button used to be not as good but these Ospreys are a different breed than the old button barrels.

For kaugers, just tell your smith you want a prefit for Kauger, semi cone. Your action will have a drawing with it. Save it as a pdf and send to the smith making your prefit. No need to have first one done special. You can literally get a barrel from any smith that cut for Kauger and screw on. I have 3 or 4 barrels on my shelf and can swap barrels in 90 seconds.

Big thing to remember, semi cone barrels won't work on actions with full cone bolt heads, like some of the BR actions from kauger.

But you can still get those made to fit just have smith cut for full cone.

For the next price point up from a Remington 700 I’ve been very happy with both the Kelbly Atlas Tactical and the Bat Igniter. By the time you true a 700 action and work over the bolt if needed (and if you want to get the most out of a load and not crater primers you’ll probably need to bush the firing pin hole) you are better off with an entry level custom action.

Thinking I might go with a Kauger CRS without the trigger hanger for $1100. From all the recommendations here, features, and price point, they seem to be pretty good. I also looked at the Impact 737r today and they seem really nice and have a very strong following in the PRS crowd. Little more spendy at around $1475. No swappable bolt heads, but can buy a new bolt for like $500. Everyone seems to also make prefits for them if you want that route, and there rail and recoil lug are integral instead of pinned like the Kauger, which is probably a bit stronger. I think as long as a guy can do a shouldered prefit on the Kauger later on down the road, that might be the route I want to go, with the added bonus of $100 swappable bolt heads from say 223 to 6 GT or any other .473" based case. They both take AICS and AW mags. Probably go with a 28" LV Bartlein, McMillan A5, and a Trigger Tech Rough Diamond to round it all out. Should be a decent shooter in a 6 GT for dogs, LR steel, and the occasional PRS/MOA match.

IMO with a rem clone, look for quick takedown bolts, side bolt release, availability of different offset trigger hangers, and known good fit of bolt to action bore.

For the quick takedown bolts, they're a bayonet lug for the shroud instead of threaded. That means no tools required to pull your firing pin assembly for cleaning or clearing a pierced/blanked primer.

Trigger hangers are nice for keeping firing pin fall >0.240" when trying different triggers, as well as part of the timing and reducing cock on close and hand-off.

Side bolt release means you can use any trigger for a 700.

Tight bolt clearance keeps lug contact consistent between top and bottom lug, reduces bolt cock from the angled 700 sear, leaves less room for debris to accumulate, provides better bolt face parallelism to cartridge base for consistency.

Aside from those things, any custom listed in the previous posts will do. Find yourself a good smith (if you dont have one already) and build a working relationship with them. It can cost a little in the beginning, but most smiths like to be wined and dined during the honey moon phase and just throw money at them. In due time it'll come back around when you, one of their best customers, needs something done quickly or out of the norm.

All I can say about this is I have a Kelbly Panda that has been in constant use for F-TR for over eight years now , and it is one of the finest actions I've ever seen . I wear out a Barrel about every nine months , ( 3,500 to 4,000 rounds ) and this Panda just keeps humming along . And should you ever have any issue with a Kelbly ; Ian or Jim is just a phone call away . When you purchase a Kelbly , you don't become a "customer" ! You become part of the "family" !

Since you don’t need integral rail and lug like you wanted earlier. I’d also take a serious look at the Zermatt TL3 and the lower priced Origin.

Yup and you don’t have to pay $500 for a new bolt. Only $135 for the bolt head. The TL3 can take AW and AICS mags and does have an integral recoil lug though but it’s more of a nice than a need. As long as a recoil lug is pinned you can swap barrels easily. The Origin is $900 and gives a lot for the price. Everyone makes shouldered prefits for them and if you get the $35 Hunts Long Range recoil lug for the Origin you can run TL3 prefits on it. That’s what I did with mine.

Don’t overlook the 25 creedmore.
Better barrel life than the 22&6mm.
Just a thought.

Yah, but it does not fit in Rem 700 footprint.

But the Kelbly Atlas does.

I like kauger's and kelblys. The customer service for both are excellent. I see a lot of PRS guys using Impacts but have never handled one. Also Bat is top tier. I wouldn't argue with anything mentioned in this thread. i just ordered a mack bros Evo ii and own several Kauger and kelblys. Most listed have different features that make them unique from each other.

I prefer trigger hangers. Makes it a lot easier for me to service the trigger and it beats having to tap on the pins to remove the trigger, although each way takes very little time.

If by chance you do choose a kauger, as a repeater I'd go flat bolt face, and then you can buy variable shoulder prefits at your heart's content. Crown ridge barrel works only charges $199 to chamber a barrel nut barrel and they do damn fine work along with ragged hole barrels, and a few others. I also prefer a shouldered prefit, but one thing is for certain, I'd bet money no matter what custom action you go with you will love it. Let us know what you get!

Yeah I hate trigger hangers. One more thing in the mix. No need for them in any action I have used in over 30 years of shooting precision rifles. I personally wouldn’t buy an action that used one. Just my opinion as I know people use them with success.

Check with Zack at Old Dominion Rifles, he is the Kauger man. World class builder as well and just a great guy.
