Benchrest style 22lr build

I have the equipment but not the skill. A KK300 Walther, a 1913 Anschutz, and a 2500X. I have a .900 and a .920 with tuners for the 2500X and factory barrels on the other two. I understand your thinking, but have seen none that have been competitive with a large diameter barrel without a tuner.

Butch, I'm willing to give it a try I shoot local BR matches. with a Turbo and a RBRP Vudoo now. Both have Shilen Ratchet barrels on them.

Tony, Talked with Jeremiah Mohr. He told me he could get the 3 groove by the end of May from Dan. Am just going to try one. If it don't shoot. Will go to a .900 barrel on it.
Am still planning on sending you the Turbo this fall for a new Chamber in the Shilen Ratchet Barrel.

I'm expecting mine hopefully this week. I always like to try everything. Most of the time it doesn't help and is a waste to time, money and effort but how else to you know what works best except to try it.

All and all, I've been very happy with the 4 and 8 grooves I've been getting the last few years but who knows maybe these will be even better.

The rifle I have now is a Winchester model 52 pre A. It is very accurate, but the trigger is way to heavy. The stock is not designed for bench shooting and due to a medical condition I need a trigger down in the 2-4 ounce pull weight. If I get the Vudoo, I can stock it myself. Any other direction requires a gunsmith.

I didn’t know there were any of the 3 grooves out there yet. If they are out there what have you heard and who did you hear it from.
I have two on the way and can’t wait to compare them with Dan’s current offerings.

I would also like to add to the thick barrel vs thinner barrel conversation. For me, and maybe just me, it is really hard to tune a thick barrel. It is much easier to tell when an .850-.900 barrel is in tune. Many have said when they add a tuner to a thick barrel it did not shoot any better. Which is the same as I have found. But what that means is the barrel wasn’t really tuned with the tuner and certainly wasn’t tuned without one. When you add a tuner to the thinner barrel’s it becomes fairly easy to tell when it is tuned.
It is kinda like when we had 8 or 9 different lot numbers of ammo to test and after testing you still could not pick the right one to buy. The reality of the situation is none of it was really good ammo. When you are in tune you should know it and when you find killer ammo you should know it.
If none of this makes sense just disregard.

I was at Braxton co the day before the last triple duce match. There was a few guys there with 3grove mullers testing them. From what I was told they all did well the next day in the match.

Before benchrest my kids raced karts. There was several winning chassis manufacturers. All I looked for in a chassis was when I made a change in set up, did it effect lap times. As a barrel diameter increases the less seen affect of the tuner adjustment. Me personally, if I have a choice of above or below .900 barrel, it would be below.

While I would not disagree, why not simply AT .900” ? Pretty simple really.

As to the thoughts about tuners….. they work, no question.
They are straight forward to tune for those with a bit of discipline, little disagreement.
99%, of the BS comes from forums involving the basic approach for “ leave it or play with it”
If you’re a seasoned shooter, whatever lights your fire.
If you’re new, until you have experience, learn about ammo properly, learn largely what your gun and yourself are capable of , and learn more than just forums, you are often dead before you start making things unnessarilly complicated
New guys often find countless ways to be self defeating, you heed to learn how to learn quite often.

Trying to come with a 22lr build for non sanctioned local matches. Would prefer a single shot action and a 24-26” heavy barrel 1.2 or 1.1”. Shooting at 50 & 100 yards. So far I have come up with 2 options. Order a vudoo barreled action with Bartlein BR contour (might be smaller diameter) and get a revolution 3” benchrest stock from Urban Rifleman or get a 2500x action and send it to a local smith to have a barrel put on and try to find a stock for it ( not really wanting a true BR stock). Thought, suggestions or did I miss another option.

I have several of those 3” stocks from Urban Rifleman and a few McMillan stocks that I use for registered centerfire BR matches. I’m curious about your statement that you are not really wanting a true BR stock. Is it because there are no registered rimfire matches in your area, or some other reason.

Tony, Just talked with Jeremiah. He's a new Grandpa! Said he talked with Dan week and a half ago. Dan had 4 blanks on hand. Dan will make one 1.2 dia. Jeremiah thought he could have it in 2 weeks.
Sending him the action this week.

.900 is fine. What I'm saying, if I had to go up or down in size it would be down.

Yes it’s easier to find a gunsmith than a gunsmith that also does stock work. The reason I asked is because I noticed that Voodoo sells complete rifles and some of the options include BR stocks, so Voodoo would do that part for you. I’m guessing that would include a long wait time but sometimes you get lucky.

Randy Owens made a very fine benchrest stock for my Vudoo barreled action.

They do not make a Right Bolt Left port actions. I have a Anzchutz 54 MS gun now.

Why is a left port needed? for loading, I shoot Anschutz and they can easily be loaded from the left with a right port. they have the best loading tray and is perfect for drop and close with the bolt, no hinderance there.
