Benchrest stock makers

I feel they will do good. Maybe @JasonT can do some inletting on the side for you.
Absolutely! I’ve done plenty of BAT, Barnard, and Remington inlets for myself and friends. Give me dimensions and I’ll even put stainless steel or aluminum pillars in for you ;)

I actually made some titanium and 7068 aluminum pillars for an aerospace engineer buddy - those are light and strong as steel.

I have a run of non inleted laminated 3-in bench rest stocks that are currently in production and will be here soon. I will be offering them for 399 and they are completely finish sanded ready for finish with a butt pad installed. These are flat top stocks and can be inleted to pretty much any action.

But the response from offering these to people is they kind of turn their nose up at them because they're used to their Kelbly or their McMillan or whatever. Like a laminated stock will not shoot as good as a composite stock. But nonetheless I am going to offer them and they are significantly less expensive than the old offerings.
If we're talking short range BR, which is what the previous posters are refering to, the problem with a plywood type of stock is that it won't make weight for light varmint class(10.5 lb). The bare stock needs to be down in the 25 oz. or less range. That's why fiberglass or the carbon fiber skinned balsa stocks are preferred.

The heavier plywood or laminated woods should be fine for heavy varmint(13.5 lb) though.

My guess is that class will disappear over time if you can't build rifles.

I think that is unlikely. Almost every rifle on the line for LV, HV or Sporter weighs 10.5 or less. If you build a 10.5 lb gun you can shoot all three classes.

One way or another, we will find a way to make weight.

By the way, I have no intention of playing down your stocks. No offense intended. They are great looking stocks for their intended use.

From a longrange benchrest perspective, making LG weight is one thing I see with them (at 5lbs) other than being a dedicated 700 footprint (which Kauger has a dual port action for that with a little work to the stocks ejection port cutout). I’m not sure what weight difference the aluminum block adds, if any? I’d be curious to see once you get the blanks. I’m also interested in seeing the tang area to see what is there to work with as far as inletting goes (square tang or 700 style?) Also on your blanks, will they be scooped, or not?

Sorry but that is not correct, I have had 2 Shehane baby trackers that made weight 1 was a LV, and had a weight system so I could shoot it in LV & HV!
The second was a Hunter Class rife limited to 10# and that rifle is still being shot in NBRSA matches.

I already have Rem 700 with BB.

I was talking about NON INLETTED. You can inlet it for whatever.

My McMillan weighs less than a pound.
Then weight added to the butt for balance to make 13.5 custom weight.
The rake has to be ibs & nbrsa compliant.

Getting them inleted & bedded cost around 700.oo by my information. This is where "the rub" is. (Ouch!)

I really don't care who the stock maker is. If it'll work for the games i play I'll shoot it.

The long range laminate stocks are easy to make weight of 17 lb. That's with a 3 inch wide forearm. I also make 6-in wide forearms two and a quarter inch wide buttstocks out of laminate that can make weight of 17 lb. But you have to use certain scopes along with reasonable length barrels.

I’m reguards to urbanriflesman’s stocks, there’s no doubt that you can make weight with them. I’ve done a couple of builds with this stock and was able to make LG weight, but like you said you have to be selective and in some cases make sacrifice. A 5lb stock limits you.

I’m aware of that. I realize that you can’t answer it now, but I’m curious of what the weight difference will be between a finished stock with & without the block.

It all depends on how and where they make their flattop cut in relation to the section that angles to the grip. Not all flattops will accommodate both a 700 & a benchrest tang without the benchrest tang sitting above the stock line. Been there, tried that. Doesn’t work too well.

Oh, ok. I was told by another builder that was using benchrest actions, there was plenty of meat there. But I guess all I can say is get one and see.

It may very well be, and hopefully is. I have seen it work both ways with flattops. If it is, it will definety be a valuable option this day and time.

I just need someone to tell me what they need, I might be able to make tweaks. We will have to see.
