Beginner front rest for Fclass

I am in the process of having a custom rifle built for shooting in some formal matched this coming year for the first time.

I have read that the new Bald Eagle rests leave a lot to be desired. The price is right for me is why this is tempting. Are there any other rests close to this price range maybe 100.00 more that are better rests. Thank you for any replies. My stock is a PR&T lowboy with a 3" wide fore end

Very Respectfully

Nice choice in stock. If you find your gun is competitive get a nice rest. www.viperbenchrest.com and you will never have to upgrade......Best of luck... 8)...Have fun

Much of what you read about the new Bald Eagle rests, comes from second hand information. For the money, they are hard to beat. When you feel you need a bigger/better rest, you can always sell your old one.

Buy that rest and get on the waiting for a NEO. Save up while the NEO gets here and when it does, sell this rest and upgrade.

I have a couple of the Bald Eagle rests. They are perhaps not SEB's, but with a little tweaking work pretty well. I made a more solid front stop for mine. Also took them apart and cleaned out the lube they came with and relubed them with a lighter and better product. I found metal chips in one of them. Mine are the slingshot model. These are long and in combination with the PRT LowBoy stock, I ran into trouble at a range with my setup being too long for the bench. you may want to purchase the standard model instead of the slingshot. I have a PRT Low boy and it would not be my first choice for prone shooting. Unless you are a fan of joystick rests, the Bald Eagle will work for you. You usually get what you pay for, but these rests are decent.

Recently bought my first rest. I'm not a bench rest shooter, F class shooter, or competitor otherwise. I have shot some. 0.2-0.4" groups and such, but my fun at this point is from a recreational standpoint and primarily working up good loads. Plan to get into PRS and Designated Marksman events this coming year.

I started searching for my first front rest recently and quickly narrowed it down to a Cowan rest or a new Bald Eagle. The Cowan rest is what I would have bought if they took credit cards, as I'm broke at moment. His (Joseph Cowan) rest looks to be an incredible value at $250-ish, but I needed another top, speed screw, and cost quickly got to around $450-500, that I simply didn't have.

Due to finances, I reluctantly went with the aluminum slingshot style Bald Eagle from bullets.com. It was $165 and along with a very nice Bald Eagle rest bag, cost me $200. I read all the mixed reviews here and elsewhere. I spoke with Shiraz regarding some very specific questions about his rest. As I understand it he bought Bald Eagle about 4-5 years back, is a very accomplished F class competitor, forum member here, and owner of Bullets.com.

It was the smoothest purchase I've made in a long time. The rest was on my door step in four days. The box was in perfect condition and everything within it was simple and intuitively laid out, including great instructions and any tools, T handle Allen, etc.. I opened it up looking for some of the cheapness I read about, some rough machining, something, anything, that would justify the mixed reviews.

It quickly became apparent that people bashing this rest were full of crap. Many potential motivators, maybe after spending $600-1200 on their rest, it just seemed natural to bash a similar item that is a fraction of the price. Honestly, I don't know what motivated people. I took it entirely apart, greased it a bit, carefully reassembled the rest. Installed front bag and went out and had the most enjoyable day at the range ever.

The cross hairs on my Burris Black Diamond 8-32 were eerily steady. I've never seen them so still. I'm not the most accomplished shooter, just a fair shot at best, but I'm improving my skill. I have not had the luxury of shooting on the fancy NEB, Farley, etc rest. Of course they are better, when something cost 10x as much, that is usually the case. I'm going to find a nice Hardigg case on EBay to store and transport my new Bald Eagle. She's going to serve me well for a very long time I suspect.

Might add a Sinclair speed screw, but that's about it. BTW, it will fit threading on aluminum, but not cast iron models. No idea why the threads vary, but it's a quirk I'm willing to overlook. I think Shadetree makes a joystick that can be used on this rest for about $375. Slick product and I may revisit this idea down the road if I justify the need for a joystick. Nice feature I'm sure, but too pricey for me at the moment.

I hate things being outsourced to China. I am a huge fan of older Burris signature and BD scopes, and loathe hearing they are having some scopes made in China. I'm also a fan of $500-700 fly rods, and won't buy any farmed out to overseas manufacturers. My rods are made in Colorado by Scott. So if that alone brings the criticism to the Bald Eagle, I get it. Just as much as the average guy. Big American flag hanging on my garage.

But I will tell you this, if you let people tell you older Bald Eagle rest made in Pennsylvania are great, but the new ones made overseas are junk, you are being misled. Actually, just call it what it is, you are being lied to. This Bald Eagle rest fits together like a Swiss clock and performs flawlessly for a rest at its price point. Carlsbad, or similar name forum member, is selling custom thrush washers to make these and other 3/4" post rest even smoother. Got mine in the other day and can't wait to add it to my Bald Eagle rest.

PS, thanks to the several forum members that sent me PM's about their Bald Eagle rest. Saved me ALOT of money.

Well said Dan! Being old and retired, I need to economize sometimes. A Lexus is nice, but my Ford gets me there. Then again there are those items that I can afford, but can't justify the $$. A front rest is in that category.

THANK YOU!

You know, I read some of those negative reviews and was thinking, "what the hell are they talking about", but did not want to get into a debate on a public forum. I wish more guys with positive experiences would speak up.

When I bought the Bald Eagle company a few years ago, the first thing I wanted to do was bring the rests back and give people another option for rests. The old rests, while made in USA by the former owner, had tired dies and components that had to be hand fitted for each rest. That meant that future parts were not a straight drop in. Then one of his suppliers for a critical part passed away and he stopped making the rests. We got all the remaining components with the business purchase and after much frustration threw most of them in the recycling container. The new rests are almost made entirely on CNC machines in Taiwan and we redesigned several of the internal components to make them function better. They are a much nicer and better made product than what was previously available. Being a shooter and knowing what we look for were major influences in the redesign. Now, we have 8 different models for every type of shooting and taste. We sell A LOT of these rests! The price is incredible because we are the designer and importer and sell direct to the end user. We have total control over how they are made and own the dies to make the bases as well as all the drawings for the balance of the products. The machining on the bases as well as the rest of the components is made to fine tolerances on CNC lathes and machining centers. Also, when was the last time you got a rest with a full manual that showed every part in detail? You get that with the Bald Eagle rest. If you ever need replacement parts, they will be a perfect fit and drop right in. We also sell all the accessories for these rests at a really good price.

These rests are an incredible value!

I recently bought one of these, they were $100.00 off of the regular price, I was tickled to death. The next thing I knew they were being sold for $165.00, less than one half what I had just paid. My good deal no longer seemed such a good deal. I like the rest just fine but would have been ecstatic at $165.00. This is a true bargain in my opinion.

Yes, they were previously being wholesaled through many dealers and so the pricing was higher. Finally, I decided to yank all the dealerships for the rests and sell direct, and dropped the prices to pass the savings to the customers.

Maybe add a wider heavier plate rest for the LR benchrest crowd..

Ray

Ray -They are being manufactured as we speak. Really heavy and larger footprint. Will talk more about that when it is ready to ship (less than 2 months). More expensive, of course.

Nothing like it on the market.

Shiraz ,please keep us updated as to the progress and availability of this.... I only receive your catalog once a year so a heads up would be great lol... Thanks in advance

Just to clarify - it will be a larger version of the triangle rest. Longer legs (more stable foot print), heavier, all cast iron and will have a larger top that can accommodate up to 5" wide fore-ends, if I remember correctly.

I designed it so that the BR crowd as well the .50 Cal. crowd can use it, plus some F-Classers who want a really wide stance.

Shiraz, will the new wider top be such as it will fit the BE1004 base? Please?

I just received my bald eagle cast sling shot and it appears to be very well made and was very well packed. The only bad thing I can say is they were out of bags so I had to order from somewhere else :( I hadn't heard of the company before and was hesitant at first due to so many mixed reviews but after reading up on the company and realizing the new owner is the same guy behind all the grizzly tools out in the shop I had no reservations buying it. I don't know how much woodworking you guys do but grizzly makes fantastic tools and has outstanding customer service. They are constantly coming out with new cool tools and improving the old ones while maintaining high levels of customer service. Sure you will hear the odd horror story every so often but every one I have heard ended like 'grizzly sent me a new tool or new parts, etc'. Crap happens sometimes and it's how the company handles it that they should be measured by. I have no idea about the old bald eagle products but based on the history of his other company and the HUGE sample size of 1 ;D that I have seen the new bald eagle rests are pretty darn good. It is a LOT of rest for $200.

Yes it does. Guess I will have to order some extra tops as well. :)

That means all the guys that have the Bald Eagle rests purchased within the last 2 to 3 years will have the ability to upgrade to the wider fore-end top.

MJT - we have 2500 front bags on order and they should be coming in soon. We do have the 3" wide for the F-classers in stock.

Butch - thanks!
