Bedding

I have a .338 Baer in an HS Precision stock that is Devcon bedded. I was contemplating replacing the stock with a Bobby Hart, but it comes with aluminum bedding built in. Is one bedding any better than the other? If the Devcon is better, would I just take out the aluminum bedding and replace it with the Devcon? I looked at a few YouTube videos for Devcon bedding and it didn't look too tough......

Thanks!

So, in your opinion, is the aluminum bedding fine by itself? Or leave it in and put Devcon over it? Sorry for the newbie questions....

Have a look see at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 under “Gunsmithing Odds and Ends” for why anybody’s stock with an aluminum bedding block is still likely to benefit from having been bedded to an individual action.

Leave those Aluminum block on and just add devcon for perfect work.

This method know as skim bedding. Most gunsmith also offer this service with half price from full pillar bedding.

I have shot stocks with aluminum bedding blocks, then bedded them, and they shot much better after being bedded. People are saying to do skim bedding, but I gouge out channels in the aluminum with a Dremel tool, and leave only the portion of the aluminum that is right around the action screws, so the height of the action remains the same; also, that is tantamount to having pillars. I gouge out the recoil lug a bunch, on top and front. I think the irregular surface of the gouging process gives better grip for the bedding compound. Watch the youtube vids on bedding, but I would recommend doing a basic wood stock as your first bedding job, so as not to mess up something more expensive.

I have a question about "Devcon Steel 10110" and aluminum bedding blocks.

Does the 10110 actually have a metal in it's compound, or does it get it's name from it's strength?

If it does have a metal of some kind in the compound, would this cause a dissimilar metal reaction with the aluminum?

I'm spending a shit load of money on my first custom rifle and I'm going to bed it myself. I do not need any regrets.

Practice, practice, and practice. We all didn't get it perfect the first time. If its a shit load of cash on a custom.....practice first. Trust me on this one.

I may not have been clear, sorry. This was my question.

The post about the "shit load of money and having regrets" has to do with the Devcon and the aluminum bedding block possibly reacting against each other.
This would cause me some regrets, and be a waste of some money.

I think you would be OK using devcon. The use of devcon to bed all aluminum actions like the panda are quite common and I've never heard of an issue like your concerns.

The link above is to devcons website, it may be helpful answering some of your questions about the contents of 10110.

Thanks for that info. I called Devcons tech support before I posted. (five days ago) I'm guessing my inquiry on the matter does not deserve a reply.
