Just bought a new HS stock....

I just bought a new HS stock for my Rem 700 VLS. Just wondering if bedding it with devcon would gain me anything.

With a factory Remington action, it probably would. The outside contour can be a little variable. Those custom actions that are machined at full material condition, perhaps ground to OD, would tend not to show as much benefit. You can eliminate that concern, and the chance that the bedding block was not perfectly machined, by skim bedding your stock. If you are curious, obtain some machinist's Dykem and apply it to the action bottom. Torque the action into the stock by H-S' recommendation (65 lb-in), remove it and examine the transferred Dykem. Is there full contact? If not, where is there no contact? This should tell you whether the bedding is worth your time.

I have shot H-S stocks since the '80s, bedded and unbedded. If the action was straight, I did not see a discernible difference. If it was a Remington 700 repeater action, heat treated after machining and hand polished, there was an obvious improvement. Also, make sure that no stock material has made its way onto the bedding surface. I have a PST 025 that seemed to have a badly cut barrel channel. Investigating the stock showed that some stock filler had overlapped the tang bedding area and was skewing the action. Some careful work with a scraper and the barrel was perfectly centered. That .308 rifle shoots .3-.4 with 185 Scenars.

I going to tell you what h-s told me..torque to 60 in lbs and shoot it..no bedding needed..i did just that..added a jewell trigger.. lapped the bore w/ j-b & the result was a very accurate Remington 700 in 243.i have 3 of their stocks & am pleased

Skin bed it and be done with it---One size will not fit all actions...

I think the world of the hs pre. stocks i shoot them in comp. at 600 yds and do well . i have gotten into the habit of skim bedding them all. so i will second and third the guys here and say skim . The Rifler
