Bedding-Modeling clay alternatives?

Does anyone have any experience using something other than clay to fill in the action recesses before bedding? I have always used clay but it compresses from the bedding material and leaves high spots on the bedded surface that have to be removed. It is also messy to clean out of the action. I'm looking for something better.

Silly putty works .

I use high density syrofoam (not the white beaded stuff) cut for a tight fit in the mag well, then seal any crevices with genuine wax such as Johnsons Paste Wax, which is also my release agent.
