Bedding F12 Savage Factory pillars

In a couple weeks I will be bedding my F12 it has existing pillars, want to leave them in. How do I go about removing stock around the pillars or do I need to just leave them be and glass bed around them, need some advice 1st time bedding watching Vids and reading, hoping it all goes ok. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I skim bed the action with the pillars in place. The recoil lug gets most of the beding. I place one thickness of masking tape on the front and sides of the lug. Use a good release agent. I use Turtle wax.

Do you remove a small amount of material from the stock maybe a few thou? not really a whole lot to bed from what I see, I bought 2 lbs of Devcon 10110 I must be gonna bed a 105 howitzer lol. Don't really know what skim coat means seriously.

Bed it any way you like. There is nothing wrong with removing material to have thicker beding. I simply bedded it as is.
This resulted with more beding material at the recoil lug and the sides of the action, less at the bottom.

Have fun with it.

Be sure to put release agent on the screws.

do I build a dam to keep epoxy from going into trigger area or fill trigger area and let epoxy go to the tang area, kinda like a bedding block looks you know how it stops at the last bolt. Does the bedding stop here also maybe like a cutoff point. is just bedding the receiver screw area and a inch and half in front of the nut proper

I do not bed the tang. There is nothing at the trigger to bed to except on the sides. Remove the trigger. Fill all actions holes in bedding area with play dough to keep the bedding material out. I do bed the sides near the trigger.

I think I got it, been watching reading Richard Franklin, various other videos release agent and release agent and draft is my main concern

If you send me a PM with your phone number I can text you pics of my FTR that I just bedded along with some pointers. I have pics of all the prep work. These are probably the easiest actions to bed.

Hey just doing a little research on the site. I'm thinking of trying to bed my Savage 10 with the factory accustock until I can get up some cash for a new stock. I was just wondering how your bedding job went. I've been watching vids but not sure if I want to mess around with it just yet.

It went okay just doing the prep work is the most time consuming, don't be afraid to buff the KIWI off I didn't and it left the finish alittle rough and make sure you remove material at the lug area to get a nice wall between the recoil lug and stock, you can put a bolt in the safety tang hole to make sure it's floated, it's not hard at all, I used Devcon plastic steel putty like I said buff it reapply buff again and you will have a great finished look to the bed job, tape ething up I used plastic spoons to measure out the putty just level them and put equal amounts it does't have to be exact exact but try to get real close use a plastic knife to mix and you can use the same knife to apply the putty to your stock, remember to use 2 spoons one for putty one for hardner then throw them away, take wd40 spray in a shallow bowl take Qtips spread them around the bowl side sitting in the wd40, that way they are ready to cleanup the mess after you put barrel in stock, you can do it by yourself it's fairly easy, ask a few more people about it then dive in main thing is prefit several times and practice your moves and stay with the routine, take your time and you will be fine, main thing is applying the release agent, and buffing it for a good look to your bed job

you can float the tang easy buy using a pc of all thread with nuts on top and bottom of tang to lock the height in place, it will rest on the cutout for the trigger in the stock, that way you can adjust the float height you want I took some wood clamps along with some pcs of wood and made a vise and leveled the stock, I got my barrel cocked a few degrees on the 1st gun I done so I have to redo it but it's not noticeable only by me, you may want to figure a good way to get it str, go to a industrial supply and get your 1/4 28 bolts just get a assortment 2 3/4 down to 1 1/2 you may have to use them because your org bolts might not work after you bed the gun, just go for it you got this lol

use a pc of clean cardboard about 8in square to mix your putty on then you can throw it away, if you have something else small to bed after the gun use the leftover to knock that job out, stirring causes the putty to heat but it has a good work time it only takes a minute or 2 to bed the rifle then your done ready for cleaning

before you set the barrel action back in stock, make sure the epoxy on the rear screw mount area is removed well. I forgot to cleanup that area good and could not figure out for awhile that the firing mech was sitting on the excess epoxy, causing the tang area to stick up about 3/8 of a inch, finally figured it out lol.
