Barrel tuners. Good or a waste of time?

What a GAME on tv! UGA came ready and with a good game plan..well coached. One of the best games in a long time! Definitely, championship caliber. I'm going back and forth.

Is it just me or are horizontal mistunes often worse than vertical? Anecdotally, it seems like every time i shoot a really badly out of tune group, it’s horizontally strung. Anyone else experience this or do I just have selective memory?

I think it's vertically biased, from a gun and physics standpoint but yes, it can go out pretty big horizontally. Long range? Wind? Index barrels?

Torque maybe? This has always been a puzzle that has eluded me. If you look at the rifle it seems like the vertical should be by far the dominant pattern. But in practice it’s not so much. This is surprising to me. There must be an answer but I’m not sure what it is. Maybe the vertical is more balanced than we think.

Agreed!...more tuner weight, maybe?...Or maybe we've gone too stiff with barrels, maybe?

Horizontal de-tuning can happen when the center of mass holding the barrel moves horizontally. That changes the muzzle axis sideswing.

Basically just 90 degrees away from upswing. But usually less a problem than vertical stuff.

Is it less of a problem? In my experience the horizontal is every bit as much a problem as vertical. This surprises me.

I can't say that there is any noticeable difference between dual port and ldrop port. Those are the two guns I've done the most testing with....multiple barrels, calibers, chamberings, etc. Throw in a lp Teddy that I started testing with, way back when. This is just my own...Much less the several guns that don't belong to me. I won't go as far as saying that it can make zero difference. Just that I've never seen ANY!

What causes it to equal vertical?

Not to be a smart ass, but if the top and bottom of the barrel was fluted, it would be stiffer and flex less horizontally.

New thread on horizontal shot stringing??

Mike

Maybe you could circle back and give your instruction to someone who has never used a tuner.

Thoughts:

Start tuning with, or without tuner on?
Initial tuner setting?
Changes from initial setting?
Changes when temperature changes?

Other thoughts?

I don’t know. I just have not observed a bias towards vertical groups. Might deserve a new thread.

Ok. I'll do it but tomorrow. When
I do so, it's not meant to be the end all, be all, but close. It's what I've found to work best for me. I'll add in poi and my perceived benefits and reasons why it matters. Terry, I appreciate you asking me to do this.
