The heat index of the powders used is critical for helping barrel life on a high volume shooting.
AA2700 is one of the coolest burning powders on the Heat Index Chart and has a burn rate close to 4350.
H335 trippled my barrel life in the 6 BR vs H322 on p. dog towns, multiple barrels proved this. Win 748 extended the barrel life in the 223's over H322 shooting 50/55g bullets. AA1630 extended the barrel life in the small cases, 17 AH and 221 Fireball.
The 6 BR is simply amazing in the barrel life with H335 with Rem 7 1/2 primers, 5000 rounds minimum if you start with a zero freebore reamer. I am shooting 55-68g bullets with the H335.
Us older guys had to learn years ago not to load top-end pressures with ball powders, just back off 1.0-1.5g for the heat, and all will be well.
I have not seen the Heat Index of Stabal Match and 6.5, and I bet the powder will be in the cooler end of the spectrum.
Years ago, it was common to shoot 600 rounds per day EACH on a slow day, and 1200 Rounds EACH on a good day on the P. dog towns. On the hay fields infested with ground squirrels, you could shoot all day and never move the truck.
We cooled our barrels by running water down the bore, followed by 4 dry patches, dry the chamber, and then back to shooting. Lots of BS out there saying this method will harm barrels, and we learned to shoot 30" unturned blanks so we could set the barrels back up to 4 times.
223 bolt guns cleaned every 300 rounds when using H335
" 125 rounds when using H322/AA2015
6 PPC cleaned every 300 rounds when using a fast lot of H335-2230S-60s@3550
6 BR cleaned every 300 rounds when using H335,55-68g
243 AI cleaned every 150 rounds when using AA2700 with 70s at 3850
We measured the muzzle dia with graduated reamer pilots on a grizzly rod, .0002 increments. The setback was determined at a point to where the bore diameter was equal to the muzzle diameter, so you can duplicate new bore dia at the throat. This method is extremely effective in achieving new barrel or close to new barrel accuracy. Few realize that the bore dia grows in width and length.
We learned that IMR 4064, IMR 4895, Varget, and N550 eats barrels like you are shooting battery acid, so much so, that the barrel could not be set back due to 9" of the barrel being severely worn.
