Barrel Length for 6.5x47

Are any of you guys using a 26" barrel on your 6.5x47? What kind of velocities are you getting? I am building a tactical type 6.5x47, I will shoot the 130 bergers. I would like to shoot a 26" barrel but need the velocity to stay atleast 2900fps and really want 2950fps to keep it close to my 6.5-284 wind calls. Thanks, Dean-o

Hey Dean,

The 6.5x47 I was shooting at the TSRA LR match is a 28" barrel, and with Varget and the 130 Berger, 2970 is about practical max. Not sure what it would do with a 26", but my guess is 2900 or so would be tops.

Now, with RE-17, I have gotten up to 3010 with a 140, so it would be well over your needs with a 130....

If you want to chat more about it, just send me an email or IM, I'm happy to help.

Mark: Thanks for the intel. I had the exact same question. I would like to keep the barrel at about 25-26".

Any idea what H4350 would do with the 130s at 26"?

My 6.5 x 47L is a trued Rem700 with a 24 1/2" 1x8.5 twist Krieger barrel. I was able to push the 120 grain Berger bullet to 2903fps with a stiff load of H4350. I was using the CCI450 primer.
I could shoot the JLK 130 grain VLD over 2900 with a stiff charge of Varget, again using the CCI450.
My rifle seems to shoot the best right around maximum loads.

I would agree with Joe, mine also seems to shoot the best at the higher end...

JLK bullets shoot very well indeed. The rifle honestly shot better using the JLK 140's that anything but that was not my interest. I already have a 6.5-284 and wanted the 6.5x47L to shoot lighter bullets. Did not shoot like I wanted it to though and sort of sidlined the project. My bolt is a Kiff bolt and fits very well but is a large firing pin. I do probably need to bush it to the smaller size. On this rifle, the first real sign of pressure is a blanked primer. The rifle is a switch barrel with both 6mmbr and 6.5x47L barrels. Since both like to be driven pretty hard, you are close to blanking primers when it shoots well.

Hey Mark, did you ever get good accuracy with the rl-7? Let me know if your coming up this way. Wildcat Pride indeed!

Hey Joe, What kind of accuracy did you get with the 130's?

Are ur guys bolts bushed?

Dino - I have not tried it again. That might just happen next week though, as I hope to have a few days off. Will do on the visit to OK!

I am running Panda actions and don't have any issues with the primers unless I just get crazy, and that has happened...).

i am using a peredator action with a 26" broughton and running 130 bergers with h4350 at 2920fps with no brass problems at all.
the 140's are 2850fps

Rem06, what load are you using to get to 2920fps with H4350?

I have a 30.5" barrel attached to a Barnard action and I get the same velocity as you with a load of 41.8gr of AR2209,H4350)with the Berger 130 VLDs.

according to quick load a charge of 41.8 is the max and gives you 2895fps with h4350 and a Case overal length at 2.800. As always work up to this load because max is 65000psi.

I am thinking to build 6.5 Lapua. I have a blank with .625" at muzzle. I wonder if with 28" barrel it would be too skinny, too much vibration. Or should I keep to 26" or even shorter? I am not sure about action, but since I have Savage BVSS stock, I am thinking of Savage target action.

If its for hunting then go with 26" barrel otherwise I would go with 28" for target shooting.

26" Brl. length for a short-action hunting-rifle chambered in 6.5x47 Lap.? I would strongly disagree mate! We're not target-shooting deer at 1000 yards are we? I've built several hunting rifles in this cal. over the past year and most seem to favour the 22"-23" brl. length. Have used a S/S, 22" RKS 'gain-twist' on a Sako 75 myself for this past hunting season and have bagged 6 deer with it sofar, all one shot too). As for a 'Lightweight' hunting-rifle: 22" to 24" would be the max. length I would advice to use for this round to get all the velocity out of the case you would need for hunting-purposes. Going any longer would be sheer madness and defeats the whole purpose of this compact case/shorter powder-column/short action it is usually chambered in! If you favour fast & flat shooting cal's conbined with long brl's then you might be better of to go to any of the new Short Mags. such as the .270WSM or maybe one of the older big magnums; such as the old .264 Win. Mag.?

I have a 26" montana rifleman barrel, Rem 700.

41grs of 4350 gives me 2890 with 130gr Bergers. 41.5 gives me 2920 and hard bolt lift. 2.73 COL, 2.02 ogive.

38gr of Varget gives me 2900 with the 130gr Bergers, and hard bolt lift. Same COL and Ogive length.

If I had it to do over I would have gone for the 28" barrel.
