Barrel Issue

Longtrain

Gold $$ Contributor
I shot my buddies 308 F-T/R at a match this weekend, and of course I offered to clean it after the match.

Using Eliminator, the patches continually showed lots of blue, once that calmed down I dried the bore and bore scoped the barrel. The first photo shows what I found, multiple fissures about 10-15 inches from the chamber. It looked like acid or something had eroded the barrel. The next photos show what that area looked like following a pass with Flitz.

He only uses Butches for cleaning his barrels, was this a chemical reaction or just a bad barrel?

I didn’t notice any real issues that I could directly blame the rifle for, I scored well, shots were pretty much on call. This rifle is not his main competition rifle, so it doesn’t get a high volume workout, it has maybe 1000 rounds down it over 3 years or so.

Maybe I’m lucky, in over 25 years of competition, I never had a barrel that looked like that one. One thing, I never had one that showed so much copper fouling, so those voids must be chewing up the bullets. Over the long term, that can’t be good. He said he’ll shoot it until it doesn’t shoot.

I run some abrasive like JB or Thorroclean through it. It might look completely different after.

Believe those are pits/small voids/bad spots in barrel during forming of barrel Prior to rifling ,rifling exposes those.some look like worms, Some barrels look like Crap;but shoot lights out .if it shoots who cares !! Hide the Borescope lol !

This is from a well know cut barrel maker that was not there when new 200 rounds later showed up
