Barrel cleaning ..oven cleaner??

Hi guys..just a pole question..
I have read a few articles about removing carbon in rifle barrels..the articles were on the use of oven cleaner to remove carbon fouling in custom barrels..does anyone do this? Im not sure I would be comfortable with spraying easy off oven cleaner down my barrel..just because I haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't work ...for all I know it's safe and works great..
What do you think..would you try it? Have you done it? Is it barrel friendly?.. does it work..

That`s new to me.....

I use Patch Out in the barrel while it`s still warm.....

Probably doing it wrong...:confused:

Most oven cleaners are high in ammonia.

I wouldn't see why it would not work as it has all the right stuff in it for cleaning. I would try it to see what happens, can't hurt ? Use it on an old barrel.
 
Montana extreme and a nylon brush works good for me..I'm just curious to if it's safe on barrels and if it works it struck me as odd.. to spry oven cleaner in a 400-600$ custom barrel
 
I think there is no need to try anything else. I am using half and half water and diswasher solution since long, and it works great for me.
Two patches is enough, no matter how dirty the barrel is.
 
It may be work great..it foams up and sticks..maybe cheaper the wipe out?..as an alternative..I like the good suggestion to try on an old barrel..I wonder ..due to the hi ammonia content if it will dissolve copper fouling also?
 
That is a good point about the ceramic coating in ovens..I'm not saying there isn't 100 better product..I just like to think of alternatives most people have laying around there house that could work just as well in a jam..
Kind of cool I guess..

WHY NOT JUST USE SOME STUFF DESIGNED FOR REMOVING CARBON IN RIFLE BARRELS....??????????

I spin my 1/4 moa match barrel off and put it in the wife's dishwasher for a full cycle then get out one of my propane torches for the bench source annealer and light it off to full throtlle inserting from the muzzle then the breach to burn off any residue. Can't figure out for the life of me why it don't shoot no more.........
 
Uh, most of the oven cleaners I've ever used were caustic; strong alkali, like lye (sodium hydroxide) to cut thru baked-on / dried out greases & oils. Engine cleaning products are similar.

Not sure what effect (if any) these'd have on carbon deposits. Ammonia's an alkaline compound also but not nearly as strong as lye.

Dishwasher products typically contain sodium hypochlorite - you can read that on their labels - same stuff's in laundry bleach.

Dishwashers don't so much wash dishes as sterilize them from the chlorine released at elevated temperatures they reach, much hotter than you could put your hands into for regular washing.

Chlorine's acidic, very corrosive. I'd keep it as far from my pricey rifle bores (in fact everything I own that I want to keep) as possible.

If you happen to like using it, by all means go ahead! Just be sure to rinse well with hot water to ensure it's entirely removed, then dry thoroughly followed by a coat of oil.

What a very professional answer..thank you sir..I don't think I will be using easy off on my custom barrels..I just found it to be an odd article..and then I did a google search on the topic and there were quite a few hits....I guess when you buy a factory rifle..the barrel can't get much worse then what some companies are stocking on shelves..haha..

I read an article somewhere many moons ago about that, I think it said walk away. But that was many moons ago so I'm howling
 
I've used it many a time. Use the odorless type with a nozzle tube, foams up, has the same main chemical in it as Wipe Out for cleaning. leave in for 20 minutes, patches, no problems.
