Bag alignment !

Mine is the 5/8" all the way back (tracker) so not an issue in my case but I can see where it would be in yours.

They make an adjustable rudder . Maybe I’ll take a stab at making a 1” wide rail to attach to bottom of stock . Might raise my stock 1/2” in the rear . I don’t think that will matter . We will see !

Let me know on this as this "non-alignment" deal is driving me crazy (short drive!).

I would strongly recommend using screws (preferably) and or epoxy.

Double sided tape is going to give you a nightmare of problems when it comes to making the stock track.

If it works then I’ll epoxy it . This is just a temp fix . I’ve got super double sided tape that I’ve used before and it works great . But you’re right , not for permanent fix .

Worked on the bag alignment again today at the match, worked pretty good, I tied for 3rd in 100 yards and won the 200 yard match, placed 2 in agg, all in the unlimited class so I feel like it is getting better. First time I have shot this rifle in comp., didn't remove any sand from the ears just spent more time with the alignment and didn't have to move it at all, let my buddy shoot off of mine so we didn't have to spend time switching back and forth.

Since this thread posted back in June, I began to take seriously the alignment of the rear bag to the stock. All I can say is, what a difference it's made in my shooting. But because of the bench I am forced to use at my favorite range, I had to completely change the way I address the rifle due to lack of bench space to set my front rest and rear bag. This works for my 223 being shot free recoil, but not my larger bore rifles.

The bench surface started life as half a sheet of plywood, but with a big semi-circle cut out. This leaves too little room except on the far edges.

So I made a bench adapter that is made of 3/4 inch plywood shaped sorta of like a guitar, with abutments where the rest can lock in, and a platform for the rear bag that holds it in perfect alignment. Sand bags are piled on it to help stabilize it to the bench that unfortunately is a bit wobbly.

I'm going to test the most recent version this upcoming week and will report back. If it lives up to expectations, I'll post pics of it and while in use on the bench.

Now that I think about it , the bottom of my stock gets bigger back to front . It’s 1” at the back and I think 1.25” at the front . My bag spacing is 1” . So I’m wondering if the stock is riding up the rear bag during recoil ? Sounds right , but not sure what the fix is . Don’t really want to reshape bottom of stock .
I've reworked a couple of the Savage F class stocks to remove the taper and make it parralel with the forearm. Its a pretty easy job on a mill. Apply some clear coat and it looks good as well. Both track very well after being modified. I started with a Savage and could not get it to track until it was modified. I think its about the best modification you can make to the factory Savage F class.

My rear bag is 1” between ears and when I made a 1” wide rudder it was loose in the bag . Now I see that the rear of the stock (smaller end) is loose in bag also so I need to put the bag closer to grip to get it to fit well .

Dont let it recoil into the grip on the slide

Decided I’m going to make an adjustable rudder . I’ll post results .

If the front of the stock is not perfectly parallel to the rear of the stock the crosshair will always come off the X during recoil no matter how the bags are set up. You can see the difference in a .001" shim under a rudder, thats how little it takes to effect tracking. The rudder will fix you up.

Have another question on tracking ! So I’m trying to get my rifle tracking perfectly true for accuracy . Is it really necessary ???? The reason i ask is this . In some benchrest disciplines I think your butt stock has to have some degree of angle , right ? Those guys are shooting some pretty good groups with the rear of the stock falling upon recoil . So I’m all ears here . And for quite a while I’ve read that to be accurate your rifle needs to recoil the same everytime . So if it goes left , as long as it goes left everytime the same amount , won’t that be accurate ??? Just curious here ! I’ve shot halfway decent with my crosshairs dropping and going a hair right , but when I push it back to battery it comes pretty damn close to being right on target . Opinions please !!!!!

Thx

Mark

Alex addressed some of the questions in post #8 ?

A stock that stays on target under recoil will return to battery better than one that comes off target under recoil. It wont effect accuracy, but will let you shoot faster. Once you can slide your rifle back in the bags and the crosshairs dont move now you have to find the right body position. Move your shoulder until the rifle tracks. The butt plate needs to hit your shoulder square or it will deflect off your shoulder. If you have a rubber pad, cover it with electrical tape, rubber grabs and is hard to deal with. Bags should fit like a glove, you should not need to hammer the rifle into them.

Gotcha ! Thank u . There’s a video on YouTube of some guy that has a 600 yard record and he shows how he did it . When I watched it I couldn’t believe what I was seeing . It was like a robot . He must have shot 5 rounds in like 5 seconds . It didn’t even look like fun . It didn’t look like shooting . He spent no time looking or concentrating . Just pulling the trigger and reloading . Not for me but to each his own !
