First time at 1000 ! Any suggestions ?

I live 15 minutes from mifflin. There's a 2,3,500 yard ground hog match this Saturday. You dont need to be a member to shoot matches there. I'll be there Saturday and you can shoot after the matches.

15 min. From Mifflin ! Can I come live with you ? Lol . Have plans with the wife Saturday so Sunday I’m going . Not sure I’m up for a 3.5 hr. drive yet . This getting old thing sucks . Thanks for the invite though . Really appreciate it .

Mifflin Range is a $90 membership fee . If I read it right Ridgway would be free for my first time . Can’t beat that . Im not an NRA member though . Do u have to be the first time u go ?

Thx

Mark

You only have to be an NRA member to join the club. You will need to be accompanied by a member to shoot as a guest.

If you come up to shoot and want some company I'll gladly give you my number. The following two weekends I'll be shooting Ridgway's championship match and the one following that Williamsport's world open. So those two weekends I won't be available. But I have a good spotting scope and can help you out if your like.

Also, July 20th mifflin had a steel shoot similar to ridgway (850-1000) and it's quite a bit of fun. Well be sure to make sure you're comfortable and get any support if need be to shoot it. You'll need 65-70 rounds IMO.

Send me a PM if you'd like my number. I love talking guns and matches.

Dang Mike!
I might drive over if your buying the beer afterwards.

Arrangements can be made. There's a distributor between my house and the range lol. Come on out and play. I enjoy spotting and helping others hit their target almost more than hitting them myself !

So I’m going to make the 3.5 hour drive to shoot 1000 yards for the first time . Only have shot 500 up to this point . Any suggestions ? Savage F class rifle , 6br , 107smk , 30 grains Varget , 30 inch Shilen tube . 10-50 Sightron . 20 MOA rail . Bald eagle front rest , 20lb rear flat top bag. Pretty sure I’ll be shooting at gongs . So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated .

Thx

Mark
I’m looking forward to a range report from your first 1000 yard event.
How’d it go?
J

I don’t have a Chrono , but using a ballistics chart and back figuring I come up with about 3000 FPS . I know it sounds high but that’s what the chart says . Im at 2.2 moa for 300 yards and 7.2 moa for 500 yards . So it looks like about 25-26 moa for 1000 yards . Does that sound about right ? I do have a 20moa base so I should be able to move that far up right ?
From having four 6BR's, I'd guess you are a bit high on your velocity guess. I would come up about 30 MOA from 100 yard zero. Have fun!

Hi !

Just curious what your come up is for 300 and 500 with your 6BRs ? With my 30” Shilen , mine is 2.2 moa for 300 yards and 7.2 moa for 500 .

Thx

Sir I come up 4.0 moa with all but one of mine and that one is 3.75 at 300 yards. I've never shot at 500 yards. I've found that the JBM calculator fits my actual results very well. One of the biggest variables is muzzle velocity. All mine seem to be happiest at 2800 to 2850 fps with 105/107 bullets. Depending on temperature, it has taken me from 29.25 to 30.25 MOA to get to 1000 yards. It is really hard to get 3000 fps out of a standard BR even with a 30" barrel. With F class targets you can be wrong by 2 or 3 minutes and still get a hit on paper to correct from. Not sure with your targets. I over complicate things, go shoot!

Edit: My loads are 29.9 to 30.3 of Varget and I shoot mostly at about sea level-elevation is another thing that makes a difference.

Just got a 28” Shilen for wife’s 6BR and I had to come up 4 moa for 300 with 29.3 Varget . Didn’t think .7 grains would be so much slower . Hopefully barrel will get faster and maybe I can get to a higher node .

No need to sweat it.
If you just get to a match, many guys there will be happy to get you right up on the bank, quicker and easier than you'd think!
You're putting way too much thought into it.
The part about keeping them all centered up, and close together will come in time. Being Close Enough to have FUN, and not shoot your neighbors paper (usually) is easier than you think.
Get yourself out there, and enjoy
