I think when you straighten a bullet you also can loosen it. Now tensions can into play and that can be worse then a bullet that is slightly out of axis. Matt

Once, some years back, I played with a concentircity gauge that has the ability to straighten. One of the experiments that I did was to intentionally un-straighten a 6PPC dummy round to a total runout of perhaps .0035. and then chamber it and remeasure the runout. The seating depth was into the rifling some amount, but not to jam, and the bullet was a custom FB with a pressure ring. Bottom line, with that setup, chambering the round straightened the bullet in the neck to a number that was within my allowable limit. The reason that I mention this is that it is a test that is easily done. With thin necks, pressure rings, and a minimal amount of bullet in the neck the pressure ring acts like a ball joint in the neck...up to a point. Beyond that the resistance to straightening becomes much greater, because you are then trying to bend the neck. Another time, when I was testing an arrow straightener type of unit for an article, trying to straighten factory .220 Swift rounds, it became apparent that I was bending the case neck, which required considerable effort. Range testing did not show any improvement in accuracy. Based on several informal tests, comparing straightened ammo to as loaded, I have come to the opinion that the best use of concentricity gauges is to evaluate loading equipment, as well as the effects of modifications to that equipment, or changes in the manner in which it is used.

Boyd I believe the effects will show up more at distance like 1000 yards. Matt
