Anschutz 64 action, can it hang?

You can certainly use a 64. I used a 64 MPR with a flat 3” plate under the forearm my first year of ARA in the late 90s and didn’t finish last, it actually beat some custom guns.
It was a 1900 to 2000 gun ara score, not great but not bad for a factory gun shooting against custom. I moved on a couple years later to more competitive rifles. After I gained more experience I’m sure I could have scored higher with it.
They won’t hang with custom guns obviously but they shoot well enough to have a good time with at a local match.
I wish I had kept that gun, it was the perfect all round gun to me.

Haven’t shot 22’s in 20 years, kinda getting back into it for fun ( not serious registered matches). I see new stuff out like vudoo etc, can my old 64 action hang with these guns of today or is this a excuse to get another gun;)
If you think it will be a handicap it will be, just the way the mental game works. Chances are the rifle won't be the limiting factor in your performance for the first season.

The only way to answer the question regarding this particular rifle and the ammunition of your choice is to seriously try it under match conditions.

You can then have a data base to help in the decision making.

Well I bought another new to me gun. It’s another 64 action in a nice br stock, 21 inch barrel where my other is 25 . Yea I know it’s not custom or even 54 grade but I needed 2 similar guns to hand down since I have twin daughters. Took it to 100 yards yesterday evening with a few different brands and lots of ammo. It shoots right with my old 64 action gun I have. Both are fun and all I need (for now). Dunno how this stacks up but we will have a lotta fun shooting these. Thanks for all the replies guys.

The 64 action was the Anschutz economy action. It has less material in the action allowing it to flex more under recoil. The machining is not as precise allowing for more movement. I believe the 64 only has the bolt handle for a locking lug while the 54 has an opposing locking lug. But the 64 on average is only slightly less accurate than the 54.

A 64 will way out shoot 99.9% of other rifles , I have 2 64's and would have another one tomorrow.
This does kinda remind me of the guy who took his spacegun, added a 49.99 bi-pod and a 10x optic and shot f class on a bet/whim , I didn't win, but I A) had fun B) was there in there hanging with the top guys.
Don't let the rifle limit you, you are the limiting factor most times, go out & have fun!

The 64 was not the Anschutz economy action. That credit goes to the Flobert I and Flobert II Anschutz rifles. The 64 action has been used on a wide variety of models of rifles (and the Exemplar handgun), some with sporter barrels, some with heavy. With all else equal, variation in shooting performance comes with individual barrel quality. It's worth noting that Anschutz barrels are among the best factory tubes.

The 64 action was upgraded in about 2009 to be stiffer and heavier, a welcome improvement.

Me an a buddy had a shoot out where we did a side by side accuracy comparison between a variety of rifles. We compared two Vudoos, a Rimx, an Anschutz 54 and a Bergara B14R. I might have even had a CZ452 in there, cant recall.

We did our best to shoot at the exact same time. Counted 1,2,3,Fire then we would both shoot. We always aimed at the center and made no effort to compensate for wind. Whatever conditional changes would apply equally to both rifles.

The test was set up as an elimination event where the most accurate rifle would move forward to compete against the next contender. We also switch who was shooting which rifle to see if the difference was the shooter.

At the end of the day, to our surprise, the most accurate rifle was the Bergara B14R.

The moral of the story is that all these rifles shot really well. The difference at 100 yards between best and worse might have been something as simple as ammo selection.

I would caution anyone not to over think the accuracy potential of each "brand" of rifle, and focus on what ammo selection and possibly sorting you are willing to invest in to make the difference.

Our overall favorite rifle to shoot was unquestionably the Anschutz. For straight up accuracy the Bergara was the front runner... maybe the particular rifle we used was just a good one...

We did not like how the Bergara would jam. Sometimes a piece of brass would find its way behind the ejector and jam the bolt from moving forward... Sometimes a live round would get stuck on the left side bolt lug way. Both fundamental problems with the Bergara design that they better sort out soon.

The RimX was our least favorite jamomatic rifle. It has a ridiculous controlled round feed system that fails miserably when a round somehow find its way forward of the fixed extractor. Once that happens you are out of the fight and need tools to pull the hot round out of the chamber. Until RimX redesigns their controlled round feed system and changes it to some sort of spring loaded system, I would recommend that you avoid RimX like the plague.

The simplest answer is yes. Any rifle can be the most accurate rifle ever as there a so many variables going into what makes that possible. Heck older Winch. and Annies are easily as accurate as anything made today. Now are they up to par with more modern rifles made with mags and hi tech triggers for sport shooting like NRL/PRS..probably not but they weren't designed for that either. MY buddy had a older cheap cheap pencil barrel Savage in 7mm mag that would shoot sub 1/4 grps with factory ammo straight out of the box. It was frustrating to me while I carefully tweaked hand loads on custom built rifles to achieve good results. Point is if enough of the variables align whether by chance or by plan any rifle has the potential to be a bug hole shooter.

Well the 64 hung in there for a win against a mixture of cz’s, tikkas one rimX and a vudoo in a little club shoot we had. We had big winds so it really wasn’t a test of the most accurate rifle I don’t think. Targets were shot at 50,75 and 100. The best part , It was a fun day hanging out with friends. Hopefully next month will be a little better conditions.

It was fun for sure. Never shot in wind like that before, ever! LOL when ammo boxes are sliding off the bench I consider that strong wind.

Reads like you have the most important part down, you had fun.

Looks like you handled the winds pretty well from your scores. Tuff day for all
