Anschutz 64 action, can it hang?

In rimfire competition, the right ammo can put you on top, but finding the right lot is always a major effort. If you do find that lot make sure you buy several cases!
True, but the ammo is only one part of the equation to winning. There are many parts to the equation.

Right ammo won't help an inferior rifle or mediocre shooter. We are members of the Terrell Pistol and Rifle club. Our place is north of Terrell. Non members can compete. You will have to pay a $10 entry fee. We shoot the 4th Sunday ea. month.

Haven’t shot 22’s in 20 years, kinda getting back into it for fun ( not serious registered matches). I see new stuff out like vudoo etc, can my old 64 action hang with these guns of today or is this a excuse to get another gun;)

There has been a lot of advice and suggestions -- some expensive -- yet no one knows the model of "old 64 action" in question.

Anschutz made many different 64 action models, not all of which are equally suitable for all target shooting purposes. Stocks vary from sporter to BR, barrels from slim sporter profile to heavy, while triggers can be unadjustable and heavy to adjustable and light.

What model of 64 action is at issue?

1903 action , factory 25 ish inch barrel, 5098 trigger, in a 3 inch wide factory br stock bedded by Anschutz custom shop. Not top tier but it’s a nice rifle.

I agree with pigbuttons but for different reasons. There is really no reason to spend a lot of money on a gun until you decide what type of competion you want to shoot and have decided you want to shoot it. When I shot service rifle, the spring call out got 30 people 15 of whom we never saw again, 10 we saw at 1 match, of the 5 left 1 was there the next year.

In reality how much are you really losing with a 64 over a comparable 54 actioned rifle? Do they use better barrels on the 54? The only annies ive ever had were 54 action models and i sure do like em. I got my dad a left handed 64 sporter for silhouette and it doesnt seem to give up much compared to my 54 configured the same

On other forums with an actual section for each flavor rifle, the results that people who actually own both an annie 64 and a 54 indicate that the groups shot with each overlap. The best 64's will hang with the weak 54's. The shooters with custom rifles have been known to say things like, "I like my custom rifle but when I want to shoot little groups I shoot my annie." In short, your annie should hang with the custom rifles.

I shoot an Old Savage Anshutz 64 Match (which is 54 years old) at my local matches. when I first got it, it would not shoot better than 1.5" at 100 yards, but then it started misfiring. I replaced the striker spring and 3 things happened:
1. it stopped misfiring
2. group sizes dropped under an inch at 100 yards
3. trigger pull dropped from 1lb,3ozs to 6 ounces. I still have not figured this out!

I also have an Anshutz 64P pistol with a 10"5 barrel that was Vertically stringing. I also replaced the striker spring in it and vertical stringing is gone and it now shoots 1/2" at 50 yards.

another thing with my friend who also owns a savage anshutz 64 Match and could not get it to shoot. he called Anshutz and the first thing from the Reps mouth was "Did you remove the front sight? These barrels are tuned to have the front sight installed". He put the sight back on and sure enough it started shooting a whole lot better!

I got my springs from these guys:

I wish mine was left bolt left port for bench work. That’s a nice setup.
You have good components. 5098 is a decent trigger. Bedded by Anschutz should be a big bonus. For the type of shooting you say you will participate in, your rifle should do quite well. But, finding the right ammo and having a good rest will make a positive impact. Spend your money on the best-for-your-rifle ammo and practice time. Only other thing you might purchase is a tuner. You will be competitive. HAVE FUN!!
