An hour there, an hour back.

All VFR flying, the mountains are not a place to fly a small plane in the clouds, especially one without anti-ice or de-ice capability. My plane does not have the required equipment to fly IFR, but I am working on my instrument rating.

I burn about 11 gph at 20" of manifold pressure and 2300 rpm, which gives me about 152 mph over the ground. I slow it way down when I am looking for animals, I can fly along at 80 pretty comfortably with 20 degrees of flaps in, not sure of the fuel burn while doing that, but when its hot the oil temp comes up a bit.

Great story! My old boss used to use his 172 to pick up Massey Ferguson parts from a dealer in southern NewYork for some of the older farmers that would come into our shop in northern Jersey back in the 70’s.My father in law used to go for what they called a$40- cup of coffee in his Piper T-Tail.
He took my dad and I up for lunch in Cape Cod once just because, got some great pictures of my home from the air too.I really like the idea of the freedom and fun you use your 180 for.Great taste in rifle and cartridge by the way:)

My son and I would love to try that in our 1960 but I'm afraid it would take over than an hour. Even with the tip tanks figure we'd have to stop once anyway after we left Arkansas. And you are right about the stall speed, you can fly for a while after the buzzer starts....

The International 180/185 Club annual meeting is in Steamboat Springs this year. I base out of Glenwood Springs, which is about a 35 minute flight from Steamboat. There will be a fly out day to Glenwood on one of the days. Utah back country strips are start at about an hour out.

Very nice write-up . Beautifully maintained aircraft , Sir . The picture brought back a lot of very fond memories of the hours I've spent in 180's & 182's climbing to altitude as a jumper , and flying jump loads . Great aircraft . The work-horse of American general aviation for decades . **For our members not familiar to these planes , the 182 is basically the "Twin" of the 180 , but with a tricycle landing gear .**

Would love to come for the international meeting, do you know the dates? We are fully instrument rated and even have harness but learned a long time ago to try not to have to use any of it. We try to fly vfr all the time, it's lot better to be down here wishing you were up there than the opposite, so the weather plays a large part of the time we allot to the trip. Would love to come out and meet you guys....

This is last October, camp is set up, time to go coyote hunting.

I did not get any that trip, there are not many in that country, but I was surprised to not see or hear any.

well that's cool. plane, rifle & sleeping bag. add ammo & food + gtg. why the cover on the cowling?

It was October and I expected the low overnight to be in the low 30's to possibly high 20's. Its pretty hard on air cooled engines to start them at temperatures like that. I have a camp stove fired heater that I use to preheat the engine before I start it.

That's a classic panel. :) What? No ADF? My last approach for the instrument was an ADF and no GPS or Loran allowed. I guess I got lucky. I passed. :D

Before satellite radio, I used to listen to the AM radio stations on the way to Texas. Man, there were some godawful stations, mostly hellfire and brimstone preachers with a few country music ones.

Yeah it ain't like it used to be, that hole in the middle of the dash is for a Garmin 597, most fokes don't even carry a current sectional anymore. When I started out you carried an Arkansas road map and binoculars, read the names of the town's water towers. Old 7AC champ, hand prop to start, 65 cont. ......it was fun. Wish I could go back, for a little while anyway.

My neighbor just got a new boat that is baddass. It has a Lycoming 0540 and that isn't all that unusual but this one is supercharged. He says "I ain't just saying this cause it's mine but it is the fastest airboat I've ever been on!" Is the attitude indicator what we used to call artificial horizon?

Other than your radios, that panel looks quite modern compared to mine. I have zero navigation equipment other than a heading indicator and magnetic compass! I still have period correct oil pressure, oil temperature, cylinder head temperature, ammeter, VSI. But, I do have modern radios.

I really like the old 1950's panels. Both the shape, and the instruments. I will probably never be a glass panel kind of guy.

In the photo, I am actually on my way home from shooting prairie dogs. It was January so the action was a little slow.

Now that IS a classic panel. :D

The panel in the Citabria I flew was very spartan. No gyros or nav. radios. Did have a G meter though. Had to wear the parachutes when flying airbatic maneuvers. The most fun plane for me to go fly for an hour or two.:D
