An easy way to use the Wheeler Method

Yesterday wanted to find touch in a R700 , but didnt really want to remove the ejector so I just took a piece of sized brass and ground a slot in the case head to clear the ejector, like a garand head space gauge. Stuck the case with bullet on the bolt and it was good to go.

I save all my ground cases along with the ones that are tapped for the same purpose and keep the reference bullets with them too. I have not pulled an ejector for that purpose in many years.
Merry Christmas.

A pic would be great .... I have pulled one off so many times I dread it.
Been on my hands and knees several times looking for spring or ejector ...
lol shot a few across the shop myself. see pikespeak post for the idea.

I tried this years ago and it didn’t work for me. Can’t remember why at the moment but it wasn’t consistent for one reason or another. So, you guys are getting this to work and getting the same results as you do when pulling the ejector? maybe I didn’t make my slot big enough or something but I couldn’t make it work.

Nice. That would be a piece of cake to modify cases on my mill. Might have to try it. Will check the modified cases against unmodified cases with the ejector removed for consistency

as long as the ejector isnt pushing on the case why would there be any difference- i used a grinder so i did have to deepen the slot after 1st try

The problem, as I see it, of using an ejector cut out case with the wheeler method is that the ejector is rotating the bullet in the lands. The Wheeler method depends on feeling the tiny bit of force it may take to extract the bullet from the lands. The rotation is breaking the bullet free prior to the bolt reaching the extraction cam. That's going to give a different feel and thus length, than using a bolt with out the ejector
