"Also ran" cartridges

Don't forget the 350 mag in the 700 BDL in the late 60's (along with the 6.5) and the 673 (22" bbl) and the 700 classic (24"bbl?). Like a short action 35 Whelen

Everyone is forgetting that the 6.5mm Rem Mag was released at the same time and in the same guns as the 350 Rem Mag.

Having 7 rifles in 25 caliber, i can confess to wanting a 25 -350 Rem Mag.

44-40 highest number of men killed, eh?!
I would think it more likely the 45ACP.
2 World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and still to a limited number used today.

I picked up a Rem 591 (5 mm RFM) late last year. It's been a hoot to shoot. Luckily Grafs received a shipment of ammo not long after.
That's the good thing about the centerfires I mentioned. At least you can reload them if not make brass for them. With the 5mm, which is a lazer in it's own right, once you're done, you're done for a long time if not forever.

I think the OP was wanting to shoot small critters. I had the same desire some years ago, and considered 218 Bee, 221 Fireball, the 17’s, and the 22 Hornet. Finally just went with the 223 due to cheap brass avails. As for projectiles, I finally went with the 40 gr Nosler BT, it being fairly frangible. Varmint Grenades might have been even better. But a guy sold me hundreds of the Noslers. You can load em hot or not.

I bought a full case OUCH, but I'm good for quite awhile now.

As I’m reading this two cartridges come to mind. The 7BR and the .357 sig. I realize these are primarily hand gun rounds but I wonder how they would do in a carbine length barrel for the application mentioned in the OP’s original post. I live in Florida and have primarily used a 22wmr and 22RF with 40gn HP’s and shorts. Very effective on small critters and relatively quiet. E

I built a 7mm Br rifle for deer hunting, 200 yds or so. Took a 7-08 used barrel and cut part of the chamber off and fit and chambered it and stuck the result in a 700 BDL stock. Shooting a 120gr fp but picked up a box of 120 SSP bullets that I might try. Now to do the mag fix so it will feed the BR round otherwise I have a two shot rifle, which should be all I need anyway.

For my pest gun around the house I use a .223 mod. 7 rem. Shot a coyote., coons , cats with 69 gr. sierras. Not supposed to be a game bullet but Ive had good luck with it. Thats what my 550 dillon is set up with. Doug

It’s been a while.:)

When I first got out of the Army back in the ‘60’s, some friends wanted to go deer hunting. I didn ‘t even own a rifle.
I went over to Richard’s Pawn Shop where he had a model 600 in 350 REM Mag. He even had two boxes of the Green Box ammo, 250 grn I think. It had a cheap scope on it.

Well, we went over to the old Lake Houston Gun Club to shoot it. During deer season, they were open till 9:00 PM.

That was the most atrocious thing I ever shot. The ball of fire out the barrel darn near blinded us, and it almost knocked me off of the stool.

I did not shoot a deer on our trip, and the first thing I did when I got back was sell it.

but you are right. That is a hard hitting short action cartridge.
I shot a friends 600 in 308 Win with 180 grain factory ammo. One shot with that flyweight was enuf for me!

Same but feed it with 50gr BT.
Pops right through 5mm AR500 steel plate at 100yds and would have no issues with them placed in the crease behind the shoulder for deer.
Decades back the fav deer culler caliber was 222 using 50gr when deer numbers exploded in NZ ~50 yrs after their release.

I built a 218Bee on a Stevens 044-1/2 in about 1992, 24" RKS bbl. With powders like L'il Gun nowadays, and a 40gr Vmax or similar, I can shoot it at 3250fps, that works pretty well on the gophers, and it's only about a 13gr or so load, I had it up to 3400 when testing, chickened out there, no pressure signs, that is an OK action, but, it made me a bit spooked at that level, it isn't a Ruger or 1885. I don't know about ricochets at that speed with those bullets, I'm doubting they'll stay together all that well when they hit dirt. I wouldn't mind having one on a modern 1885 action with a 28" barrel, be interesting to see what a person could get out of it.
