Alliant Reloder-16

For those of you who have tested RL16 can you compare straight velocity is it slower - faster - equal to h4350.

in my case i am good with anything but slower. and ideally i would like slightly faster.

Thank you
Trevor

I'll load up a few of same powder charge of both next outing and let ya know.

Had a friend run a 6.5x47-Lapua comparison test for me with equal charges of H4350 from 140-VLD's:
  • 40.6-gr of H4350 <> 2802-fps average
  • 40.6-gr of RL-16 <> 2849-fps average
At 41.0-grains of RL16, he averaged 2878-fps with the 140's.

Donovan,

Are you saying .4 grains gained him 1,029 fps? That has to be a typo

An encouraging note for those that are running charges/seating depths that put the charge at/near case capacity is that Rl-16 has a higher density than H4350, 1.60 vs 1.55 g/cm3.

Did your friend get enough shots for an ES and SD comparison between RL16 and H4350?

Thanks,
Jon

I started my load development this morning with Reloader 16, 130 VLD Target, 205M Fed primer, 0.010 jump in 6.5 x 47 lapua. Started at 39.6 grains and moved to 41.4 grains. Here are the results at 100 yards:

RL 16 Group Drop Spread
39.6 0.175 0.218
39.8 0.519 0.324
40.0 0.213 0.431
40.2 0.583 0.801
40.4 0.195 0.222
40.6 0.265 0.326
40.8 0.124 0.402
41.0 0.415 0.480
41.2 0.251 0.368
41.4 0.231 0.414

That looks very encouraging to say the least. Nice shooting.:D

From my playing with H4350, 4831sc and Rl-17 in my 284 WIN long range bench rest/F class gun, I shoot both 162 A-MAX and 180 Hybrids.
What are key things to keep track of is what percentage of the powder burns (from Quick Load), what the amount of powder used with respect to MV and what amount of powder begins to give pressure signs.
With the change from 4831sc to RL-17 the pressure went down for same MV. Or, for same pressure I got higher MV.
As an aside, Quickload says RL-17 is the most efficient powder for my 284 WIN out of a bunch of powders. Now, I'm waiting to try RL-16 hoping it will be similar to RL-17 but less temp sensitive.

Shot some from my dasher yesterday evening starting at 34.8 then 35.0 35.2 and 35.4 out to 500 yards and largest group was 1.8 smallest 1.05

Later this week I'll run 35.4 35.6 and if I can 35.8 out to 600 and see wat happens there.

James,

Is your groups vertical, horizontal, or triangular?

Joe,

Groups are nice and round nothing at all showing stringing in any way. I will say though it's the dirtiest powder I've used. It takes twice as long to clean out the carbon in the barrel compared to using H4350.
