Age and Covid-19

There is a thread on AS about the AS membership demographics.
The info in that thread indicates most AS members are over 60.

Thought this good info to share with that group.

https://www.businessinsider.com/most-us-coronavirus-deaths-ages-65-older-cdc-report-2020-3

Americans ages 65 and older are suffering the highest rates of death and serious illness from the coronavirus, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Overall, 31% of cases, 45% of hospitalizations, 53% of ICU admissions, and 80% of deaths associated with COVID-19 were among adults aged ≥65 years with the highest percentage of severe outcomes among persons aged ≥85 years," the report said.

The CDC said it had confirmed 4,226 COVID-19 cases and 44 deaths in the US as of March 16. As of Wednesday, the US had more than 8,000 cases and 129 deaths, according to a combination of CDC and state-level data. Those numbers are likely to rise as testing efforts — which have been woefully slow in the US — continue to ramp up. Experts have estimated 40 to 70% of the US population could become infected and that 1 million could die.

Thanks for the post. Everyone has to pay attention to Covid-19, regardless of age. Where I live in FL, the average age of the current case count is 68...….I'm 68. In the adjoining county to the North, they have almost 5 times the cases and the average age there is 40. Everyone must take this seriously.

I was in Montana all last week, lots of folks shutting down to a trickle.
My wife barely got her hair appointment

the death rate for Covid-19 in the US is sitting at 1.3%. This year the death rate from the flu will likely be well under .1%.
In Spain the Covid-19 death rate is over 6%, in Italy it is over 9%.

Gee - that makes me feel better, I'm in my 70's:(

I figure I'm playing with house money - survived a deadly blood disease in my early 20's then was drafted during the Vietnam War - one of my friends was killed in Vietnam. I had orders for Nam but they were changed at the last moment due to a cut back in my MOS (military occupational skill) so I spent my duty stateside. So every thing after has been a gift. Maybe that guardian angel will see me through this one.

Would like to get one more ghog hunting season in but it's looking doubtful - if the virus doesn't get me the lock down should kill any hunting this summer.

We have a few problems and its not about mortality rates. If one person in your family dies and didn't need to that's a problem.

This is also a really big problem. Stop screwing around people. Do the math.

I saw some statistics on Italy a week ago that 99% of their deaths were over the age of 60.

In Italy it has come down to the number of breathing machines available. If you are over 60 you typically don't get one, they are saved for those that are more likely to survive, younger folks. Our country is also grossly short on breathing machines.

My wife just turned 78.. She wanted to go back to Delaware for the summer. That's inside that big red blob by Philadelphia. I talked her out of it, thank God! We're sitting in that big grey area in Texas, northwest of San Antonio, right now.

Over 60, yes. Also, smoking is much more prevalent there. Any underlying health issues also has a substantial negative effect - diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are especially harmful to your likelihood of survival. It is much the same here in South Korea, although there has not been a shortage of ventilators here like there is in Italy. It sounds to me like the doctors are doing basic triage in Italy - you treat those most likely to survive. If those less likely to survive do, indeed, survive, that's great. If not, oh well.

I shouldn't talk; I'm 64, diabetic, hypertensive, and have a (relatively minor) heart issue. COVID-19 will quite probably kill me if I catch it. I'm sure glad that I quit smoking in 1976, though!

We have been thinking about getting ready to move off the homestead and into town (71 this year) but now we're pretty happy to be in the situation we're in. We are 35 miles from the nearest supermarket, a mile from the nearest neighbor, and a half mile off the road. My 300m range is in the front yard. My daily routine is unchanged (Chop wood, start fire, walk dog, then spend the rest of the day trying to get out of working on the honey-do list) . My biggest concern is that all my friends stay safe. WH

Locally, to date in Minnesota, the fatality count is 141 flu deaths, and 1 covid fatality. Given that, even after surveying, and qualifying suspected covid patients for the test - almost universally - only about 3.5% test pos for covid, and upwards of 90% are pos for the flu.

One of the reasons flu statistics seem less threatening, is the way the CDC now classifies flu deaths. If you had the flu, and contracted pneumonia as a result, and died due to pneumonia, you are now a casualty of pneumonia, not the flu.

If you contract covid, and get pneumonia as a result and die, you're a covid fatality.
From what I read, flu fatalities have been up to 50% pneumonia related in past statistics.

Sounds like you did a better job planning than most.
