I like a tube for several reasons. But this one was done w/o a tube. A piece of 1.00" round mild steel is drilled and tapped 1/4-20. It's then bedded solidly to the area behind the pistol grip. A weight with a 1/4-20 stud can be screwed into it and some compressive material added to the back to contact the butt plate to keep everything under a bit of tension. Al, could you use a piece of Mallory metal for this ?

I think Mallory metal would work good if the particular alloy of it you have can be drilled and tapped. Pretty sure it's very similar to the tungsten rod I mentioned above and is a sintered metal alloy that makes it tough to thread, more than anything. It cuts fair and welds pretty well but I'm not sure how it will tap for you. The Tungsten copper 70/30, does this pretty well. FWIW. If it's what I already had..I'd try it but it may not go well.

Mallory metal is 90% tungsten and the other 10% is zinc and iron. It's commonly used to balance crankshafts in race engine applications. The 10% gives it some machinability for shortening and O.D. machining. The few pieces I've whittled were done with carbide.

I got a bunch of used Mallory Metal from a crankshaft shop on eBay a few years ago. My plan was to add a bit of weight to the back end and balance out a long, heavy barrel. The project spiraled out of control and ended up with a Savage BVSS stock that weighs about 22 pounds. Weight added in fore end; milled a trench and added Mallory metal plus lead shot and epoxy. Same in the magazine well, hand grip and butt stock. The butt had Mallory Metal and lead shot but instead of filling the gaps with epoxy, I poured in molten cerrosafe. It put a small crack in the wood, but a little sanding and epoxy hid it.
