Action advice

Looking at putting together my first .308 for F/TR and was originally thinking about using a stevens 200 action, but a older Rem 700 action came up for sale for 400 Canadian and am wondering if it might be a better starting point? What do you all think? What are the pros and cons of each?

Thanks

Oh boy! You don't have any idea what sort of battle you just started ;) Savage fans vs. Remington fans, ARE YOU READY TO RUUUUMMMMMMMBLLLLLE!!! :) lol!

PS: I'm not getting into this. All I'll say is they are both accurate, but Remington has better triggers available. That's it, I'm out....

Id have to 2nd the Remington easy to work on and the after market parts puts it ahead

I would say that neither one is very good! if it were me I would buy a Bat from Bat machine and be done with it!!! However if I was going to play self gunsmith I would buy the Savage, If I had lots of money and needed to hire a smith then I would go with the Remington but I warn you to do it right and make it shoot with the big boys you will have almost as much into it as the Bat BUT!!!! it WILL NEVER NEVER EVER BE A BAT!! That's all I have to say about that!

They'll both get the job done. The Rem 700 is kinda like the small block Chevy of the rifle world. Tons of manufacturers make tons of parts for them, partly due to the fact that the military has used them a great deal over the years.

If I was building a hunting rifle, I would use a Win Mod 70. My personal opinion is that nothing is more classic looking or purdier than a claw extractor like a Win 70 or Mauser 98.

If a BAT action was able to fit in the budget, I doubt he would have even mentioned a Stevens action...

But yes, you are correct ;)

A Bat or Barnard action isnt in the budget. :( I also not shooting nationals or anything like that.

PS: Sorry for opening a can of worms.

You didn't open a can of worms my friend, I just through my opinion out there because I know from experience what will happen, you will build the Remington and when you get all done and maybe 6 months go by you will wished you would have went custom and you will find it was just not that much more when all said and done. I like both the Remington and the Savage actions for hunting rifles but if I was building a F/TR and couldn't do a custom action I would go Remington I think because of all the aftermarket stuff for it, but if money is really tight and I know sometimes with a family it can be, I work ny the hour myself!! then you can buy the $200 Stevens and have fun shooting ;) and having fun is really what it is all about. Best of luck to ya ;)

Jim Briggs at Northland Shooting Supply stocks pre-fit barrels for Remington actions that use a barrel nut. So, if a custom action is out of the question, I would use a Remington 700 action with one of Jim's pre-fit barrels. That way, you could do most of the smithing yourself and have the ability to upgrade the trigger, etc. with Remington after-market parts as you can afford it. You cost would be "controllable" with that solution.

Both actions will work under the right conditions.

There you go TrxR,...that is a pretty good food for thought right there, I have talked to a few that has done the Remington barrel nut system and they were very happy with them, I have not done it myself so I can't say but I might just try it sometime myself.

I stated earlier that both actions will get the job done, but if you happen to have both actions available, use the Rem 700 and you will be happy in the long run. I'll say it flat out...while they'll both work, in the world of actions, the Bat is a Ferrari, the Rem 700 is a Chevy, the Stevens is an Edsel.

That's saying it flat out alright HAHAHA!!!!! funny and true OMG I really got a chuckle right there!!! I also agree with what you wrote earlier about the very classy model #70 Winchester and you know they will shoot right along with any other rifle, rem. and Savage included if you can find a smith that isn't to lazy to work on them! I have two smiths that I use that charge more because there is a lot more work involved in truing up a positive feed Winchester action but when they get done with them for me,..WOW!!! they shoot lights out!!!

My advise would be to put a custom action in the budget for next year. Then save until you have the cash in hand to build exactly what you want the first time. I know people don't like to wait, but it will pay off. I learned my lesson the expensive way. Building what I could afford at the time then a few months later when I had some extra money wishing I would have waited a little longer and upgraded some things. Then it's usually too late.

Spot on,..I believe that is what I said in my first post,...I still agree.

Im thinking about it. I was looking at some different actions. Anyone ever use a Pierce action? It doesnt seem to be extremely pricey, or should I I try for a Barnard S or Barnard P ? Also I noticed the Barnard P listed somewhere with or without ejector. What difference would a person notice?

Thanks
