Modifying 700 L.R. scope base

I have an extra Leupold 700 long action, long range scope base on the shelf. I have a short action I need a base for.
Has anyone modified a 700 standard long action windage base to fit a short action by adding a hole to match the rear hole in the receiver and cutting the end of the base off to match the action length?
If so, did it work out ok? Any pros or cons to doing this?

Which end are you cutting off?

Since the radius of the back of the action is different than the front, you would have to maintain that position of the mount.

Can you take a picture of that base?
